In case the United States entered World War I on the side of the Allies, Germany suggested in the telegram that Mexico and it form a military alliance against the United States. The American government was made aware of the contents of the message when the British intercepted and decrypted it.

One of the most significant incidents of World War I was the sinking of the RMS Lusitania on May 7, 1915. A German U-boat torpedoed the British ocean liner off the coast of Ireland, killing 1,198 persons, 128 of them were Americans. The strike increased hostilities between the US and Germany, which helped the US enter the war in the end. In addition to intensifying anti-German feelings, the sinking of the Lusitania influenced popular opinion against Germany during the war.

Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb nationalist, killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife, Sophie, on June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo. The pair was singled out during a motorcade due to anti-Austrian animosity prevalent in the area. The assassination directly prompted Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia, which in turn sparked the chain of events that ultimately resulted in the start of World War I. Many people believe that the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand set off the intricate network of rivalries and alliances that sparked the Great War.

A crucial juncture in American history was reached when Congress promptly authorized the declaration of war in response to the President's request.

The US entered World War I when the United States Congress made history on April 2, 1917, by declaring war on Germany. The statement was sought by President Woodrow Wilson in reaction to Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare and the sinking of many American ships. The proclamation represented a change in American opinion as the country went from being neutral to actively taking part in the war. While some members of Congress argued for peace, the majority of Congressmen felt that going to war was important to defend democratic values and safeguard American interests. In the end, this proclamation created the conditions for the US to contribute significantly to the Allied effort during World War I.

The Selective Service Act, which was passed into law on May 18, 1917, was a crucial component of American legislation during World War I. This statute, popularly referred to as the draft, gave the federal government the power to compel men to enlist in the military. All men between the ages of 21 and 30 were required to register for possible military duty under the Selective Service Act. The United States' growing demand for soldiers as it got more involved in the conflict led to the implementation of the draft. The Selective Service Act was crucial in providing the United States with the manpower it needed to make a substantial contribution to the Allied victory in World War I by building a sizable and diversified armed force.

The Armistice, which was signed on November 11, 1918, officially ended World War I and was a historic moment in history. The signing, which put a stop to hostilities on the Western Front, took place in a train compartment in the French forest of Compiègne. The Allies and Germany concluded the Armistice, which essentially put an end to hostilities and opened the door for peace negotiations. In many nations, November 11 is observed as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in remembrance of the soldiers who fought and gave their lives in the conflict. The Allied Powers and Germany officially came to an end of their war in 1919 when they signed the Treaty of Versailles, which also shaped the post-war geopolitical environment.
