Why do you think teaching digital citizenship is important?

I think that teaching digital citizenship is important because it helps students learn and create an understanding of how to use technology while learning and how to use it to increase their skills, knowledge, and resources. Not only is it important for the students to learn and understand the use but it's important for them to know how to use technology tools responsibly and safely. Teaching the students the basics of digital citizenship prepares the students for their future with full inboxes, proper email etiquette, and how to protect themselves online.

A resource you can use to teach about Digital Citizenship

The resource I chose to use to help teach about Digital Citizenship is called Digizen.org. I chose this site because the home page explains how to strengthen your awareness and understanding of what digital citizenship is and to be smart with the use of technology. The site also has many game options to quiz yourself with knowledge about citizenship and how to put yourself into the perspective of cyberbullying. One of the games allows you to create a character and be put into a school where cyberbullying has taken place and what to do in that situation.

Digital Citizenship Activity

For my Digital Citizenship Activity, I would decorate the whiteboard with laminated examples of safe and not safe ads, texts, and emails for the students to view. I will give each student popsicle sticks colored green and red, green for good and red for bad, with their names on them. I will read the examples and by tables or groups, the students will bring either a red or green popsicle stick to the whiteboard and place it with the example. Once all the students have placed their answers we will discuss whether it is a safe or not safe ad, text, or email and what to do in those situations.
