The barn symbolizes the past and the obstacles Doodle faced. The coffin and the go-cart symbolize the obstacles he faced, so when he conquered the obstacles, they were placed in the barn. In the beginning of the story, everyone thought that Doodle was going to die soon so they ordered a coffin for him. However, Doodle managed to live and the coffin was put away to be forgotten inside the barn. That coffin was a memory of a time where Doodle was thought to perish, but managed to bring a miracle and stay alive. He persevered in the face of hopelessness.
Something else that was scrapped into the barn was Doodle's go-kart. The go-kart is a symbol of an obstacle that Doodle managed to conquer with his brother, when nearly everyday they would go to Old Woman Swamp to help Doodle stand. Countless of times the brother would lift Doodle up and numerous times Doodle fell back down to the ground. The go-kart represents all that they did to eventually get Doodle to stand and walk. Before this, Doodle was not able to walk at all and had to be pulled around in the go-kart by his brother everywhere and walking seemed impossible to the whole family but in spite of the challenge, they jumped over that hurdle and accomplished the unfeasible.

"One day I took him up to the barn loft and showed him his casket, telling him how we all had believed he would die" (Pg 418). The protagonist took Doodle to the barn to show him his casket and show him that they all thought he would die. Doodle didn't die, he continued fighting and survived, passing obstacles in life.

"Within a few months Doodle had learned to walk well and his go-cart was put up in the barn loft (it's still there) besides his little mahogany coffin" (Pg 421). After Doodle learned to walk, his go-cart was put in the barn along with his coffin, showing the passing of even more obstacles in life.
