The impressment- the act of taking men to join the military or naval force by compulsion- of American sailors was the primary cause of the war, because it angered Americans that Britain were still in control over them, despite the result of the American Revolution. Of course, they didn't decide on declaring war until the War hawks, colonists who were tired of the Red-coated Englishmen and wanted to declare war on them, pushed James Madison into warfare.

On Christmas Eve, 1814, America and Great Britain signed the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812 (yet that was not entirely the case since in 1815, Andrew Jackson battled against Britain and its Native American allies at the Battle of New Orleans). The treaty did not state about the two main issues that started the war- the impressment of US sailors and the rights of neutral American vessels- but it did open up expansion to the Great Lakes, and overall the war was hailed as a victory for the United States and, significantly, sparked nationalism worldwide.

However, it is not considered to be a great extent of America's "victory" because there were no territorial gains nor losses, therefore there is no actually confirmation of which side won the War of 1812.

It was to some extent because they didn't gain or lose anything but they did finally free themselves form Britain. England still considered America to still be under the English crown but after the war they finally realize that America was Independent. This made them stop attacking American ships and the U.S. was seen as an independent country.
