Bart Howard was born Howard Joseph Gustafson to Harry and Naomi Spiegel Gustafson on June 1, 1915. He spent his childhood in Burlington, Iowa. His father earned enough money by selling beer during Prohibition for him to receive piano lessons . He left Burlington at 16 to play with a traveling band. Eventually, he moved to Los Angelos and wrote music for movies as an accompanist. Then he moved to New York in 1967 and wrote his first hit Rainbow Room. He served in the army during World War II and wrote many songs for the troops in Camp Wheeler, the camp he was based in. He worked in the Blue Angels from the 1950's to 60's and this is when he wrote his most famous song, In Other Words, otherwise known as Fly Me to the Moon. Felicia Sanders was the first to sing it in 1954 but Peggy Lee was the one who made it famous and told Howard to change it to its iconic name Fly Me to the Moon. Howard's popularity went when the Beatles entered the scene and went to his home in New Salem, New York. Not until 1996 did he return at a fundraiser in his home town of Burlington and performed his last song Young Just Once, at the age of 80. He died in 2004, 8 years later, in a nursing home due to a stroke.

I think that the song is wonderful. I like the jazzy beats and tunes. The lyrics very much relate to the space race between the United States and Russia, occurring during the time the song was written. Moreover, the lyrics go along great with the tune and the feel of the song. Also, being a romance/love song, it has a lot of gleeful and romantic emotion behind it.

Fly Me to the Moon was written in 1954 by Bart Howard, and it was originally called In Other Words. Multitudes of artists have also performed the song after the original release, including Frank Sinatra. Sinatra's version remains the most popular and well recognized, even though Sinatra did not record it until 1964, 10 years after Howard wrote it. Interestingly, the Apollo 11 astronauts played multiple songs about the moon during their flight and this song, as performed by Sinatra, was included on one of those cassettes.

O Grande Amor is a wonderful example of a combination of jazz and bossa nova. It is very sad, as a result the tempo is very slow and the song lasts a little more than 5 minutes. The song is sweet and rhythmic, but becomes a little repetitive at some points. Even the vocals add to the sadness of the song by being extremely quiet and slow. It is understandable why critics in 1965 would loved it enough to give it The Album of the Year award.

João Gilberto Prado Pereira de Oliveira was born on June 10, 1931, to his parents, Juveniano Domingos de Oliveira and Martinha do Prado Pereira de Oliveira. He lived with his family in Bahia, a state in the northeast of Brazil. He got his first guitar from his grandfather when he was 14, the instrument he was best known for playing, in only a year he became the leader of a school band. He left home at 18 to go to Salvador, the largest city in Bahia, to pursue his career in music. He played live for a few radio stations before catching the attention of Antonio Maria, who offered him to move to Rio and be the lead singer for the band Garotos de Lua (Boys from the Moon). He accepted but was kicked out a year later for lacking enthusiasm. For an entire decade afterwards, he drifted from one friend's house to another, refusing to do any work he deemed "beneath him". Luis Telles finally got him to leave Rio and live in Pôrto Alegre. Telles would make sure Gilberto had everything he wanted as long as Gilberto created music. This is where and when he became famous, and with his first recording, Chega de Saudade, in 1959, he was then known as one of the faces of bossa nova music. This is also when he married his first wife, Astrud, in 1959. After he released his third record, he decided to move to the US in 1962 and stayed there up until 1980. While there he worked on more records with other singers, such as saxophonist Stan Getz. In fact the album he and Getz worked on, Getz/Gilberto, went on to be the first non-American album to win Album of the Year in 1965. However, he and Astrud had a divorce in the mid-1960's. After coming back to Brazil, he's remarried to Miúcha and stayed in Brazil ever since, working with many other artists. He is still alive today at the age of 87.

O Grande Amor was released in April, 1964, by both João Gilberto and Stan Getz. It was part of his, arguably, most famous album, Getz/Gilberto. In the song, Getz brings his jazzy beats with the saxophone while Gilberto plays the guitar and sings the lyrics. The music was originally written by Antônio Carlos Jobim and the lyrics were written by Vinicius de Moraes. This song, along with the other 7 contained within the album, became the songs that popularized bossa nova music outside of Brazil, a type of music that is a fusion of Jazz and Samba music.

Although "Killing Me Softly With His Song" was more famously covered by Roberta Flack and the Fugees, the original piece was written in 1971 by Norman Gimbel while Charles Fox added the melody and rhythm. Lori Lieberman was the first person to record it in early 1972. Flack decided to record her version of the song one year later in January 1973, and it skyrocketed to the top of the charts for that year. It stayed #1 for 6 total weeks in 1973, more than any other song from that year, and Flack won a Grammy for it. Flack's version now sits in the Grammy Hall of Fame and Rolling Stones placed it in its list for the top 500 songs of all time, at #360.The Fugees also recorded a cover of this song in 1996 that also won them a Grammy which became the largest selling single of 1996 in the UK.

Roberta Flack was born on February 10, 1937, in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Being the daughter of a church organist she learned how to play the piano at a young age. Eventually, she got a musical scholarship to Howard University and after graduation, taught music and sang in clubs until jazz musician Les McCann helped her get a record deal with Atlantic. She released two albums that were well received but did not get her to the national recognition she has today. That song was "The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face" in 1972. It easily soared to the top of the charts for that year, but she did not stop there. She followed up with more chart topping songs such as "Where is Love", "Killing Me Softly With His Song", and "Feel Like Makin' Love" with her partner, Donny Hathaway. She started to . focus more on charitable causes in the late 70's instead of her music. However, in 1979, Hathaway committed suicide. Consequently, she was forced to find a new partner to make music. That partner turned out to be Peabo Bryson and she scored her first hit with him in 1983 with the song "Tonight, I Celebrate My Love". For the rest of the 1980's she performed on her tours, only getting back to the top 10 once more in 1991 with the song "Set the Night to Music". Her final songs were published in a 1997 Christmas Album called "Christmas Album". She is still alive and performing today at the age of 81.

Although many people seem to think that this song is exceptional, and it even won a Grammy, I have to disagree. I feel the song could be improved if it was not as sappy and repetitive. However, the chorus was really well done because the lyrics were good at using imagery to paint a picture in the mind of what is happening. In addition, Flack has a soothing singing voice that is suited to the chorus.

The band Toto was created in 1976 by vocalist Bobby Kimball, keyboardist and vocalist David Paich, bassist David Hungate, keyboardist Steve Porcaro, and drummer Jeff Porcaro, his brother, in Los Angelos. Toto signed to Colombia the same year, deriving their name from the dog in The Wizard of Oz. In 1978, they released the lead song of their debut album, Hold the Line, which reached #5 on Billboard's Top 100 and the album was certified platinum in January, 1979. Also in 1979, they were nominated for Two Grammy Awards and won one. Toto released less successful albums between 1979-1982 until they released their fourth album Toto IV in 1982. Toto IV peaked at #4 on the Billboard Charts, earned three platinum certifications, and won 5 Grammy Awards. Both of their most popular songs, "Rosanna" and "Africa", were on this album. "Rosanna" reached #2 on the Billboard. However, "Africa" went all the way to #1 in 1983, the same time another song from the album, "I Won't Hold You Back", reached #10. David Hungate left soon after its release and was replaced by Steve Porcaro's other brother, Michael Porcaro. Bobby Kimball was fired in 1984 after accusations of drug use and was replaced by Fergie Frederiksen. Frederiksen only recorded one album with Toto, Isolation, before being fired the next year. Joseph Williams was soon hired as his replacement and they recorded the album Fahrenheit, the last album before Steve Porcaro left. The band experienced a lot more upheavals in their line up over the next couple of decades. Notably, Jeff Porcaro died in 1992 and Bobby Kimball rejoined the band in 1998. In recent years, the song Africa has resurfaced on the internet and has remained very popular even now, more than 3 decades after its original release.

Oasis was formed in 1991 in Manchester, England. Its original members included Liam and Noel Gallagher, Paul Arthurs, Tony McCarroll, and Paul McGuigan. In 1994, they released their first album, Definitely Maybe. It was a huge success in their home country of the U.K. but did not find any mainstream success over in the USA. A year later, they released their second album (What's the story) Morning Glory?. Unlike its predecessor, it managed to achieve success in both the UK and the US,k mostly because of its 2 most famous songs from it, "Wonderwall" and "Don't Look Back in Anger". Their third album was released in 1997, and it was called Be Here Now. Unfortunately, it did not live up to the standards of their previous albums since the Gallagher brothers were more focused on their tabloid scandals. After that, Paul Arthurs and Paul McGuigan both left, leaving only 3 to work on the next album Standing on the Should of Giants, released in 2000. Although it was agreed to be an improvement from Be Here Now, it was barely acknowledged in the US and only a few fans still existed for the group. Gen Archer and Andy Bell joined to fill the empty spots in the band in 2002. Although they were still active, their audience in the US was virtually gone and only a minimal amount of people still listened to them in the UK. Noel finally quit in 2009 after an ongoing feud with his brother and went to create his own band, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. Oasis changed its name to Beady Eye at the same time and was officially disbanded in 2014
