Atlantic Slave Trade

During the Revolution, slavery was a big part in people's lives. Slave ships from Britain would sail for West Africa carrying goods that would either be traded for slaves or bought by African chiefs. African slave dealers kidnapped people from villages and traded them for goods. They were put on ships that would transport them to their new lives. On the terrible Middle Passage, enslaved Africans had horrible living conditions, and were often chained together and so close to each other that many died. If they survived the ships, they were sold at auctions, many ending up on sugar plantations. In the picture below, it shows Africans on a crowded slave ship.

The French and Indian War was caused because of the control of the fur trade and territory in the Ohio River Valley. It had positive and negative effects on Britain. For example, Britain gained a lot of land after the war, but they also went into debt because of all the money that was spent on fighting in the war.

Causes of the American Revolution

The Revolution didn't happen for no reason. One cause of the American Revolution was the Stamp Act. It required colonists to buy and put stamps on paper products, like newspapers, diplomas, marriage licenses, and other legal documents. Another cause was the Tea Act. This law gave a British company, the East India Tea Company, a monopoly on tea. This means that company controlled all trade of tea and the colonists could only buy it from them. The last cause was the Quartering Act, which ordered colonists to provide British troops with quarters, or housing. They were told to supply the soldiers food, candles, firing, bedding, cooking utensils, salt, vinegar, and beer or cider. These new laws made the colonists very angry and outraged, and they realized they wanted independence. The picture below is the stamp used during the Stamp Act.

Declaration of Independence

The main purpose of the Declaration of Independence was to explain why the colonies were breaking away from Great Britain. The job of writing the Declaration of Independence went to Thomas Jefferson, a 33 year old man from Virginia. He based his arguments on natural rights, meaning that all people are born equally in G-d's eyes. Jefferson listed all of the king's crimes, proving that he had no concern for the colonist's rights. On July 4th, the delegates made a final version of the Declaration of Independence and sent it to Britain

American Strengths/Weaknesses During the Revolution

Even though they won the war, during the Revolution America had many weaknesses. Some of these include: shortage of men in the army, not being trained for battle, and shortages of supplies. These weaknesses slowed the army down, but luckily they had some strengths. Some of these strengths include: people were willing to do anything for their country, French allies, and George Washington was a very strong leader that won America many battles.

Important Battles of the Revolutionary War

One important battle of the Revolutionary War was the Battle of Bunker Hill. This battle took place on two hills on June 17th, 1775. The British won this battle and it is important because it convinced the colonists to write the Declaration of Independence. Another important battle was the Battle of Cowpens. It took place January 17th, 1781, in Cowpens South Carolina. America won this battle and it was important because it was a turning point for the South. The last battle I am going to name is the Battle of Yorktown. This battle took place in Yorktown, Virginia, 1781. America won this battle which ended the war. The British surrendered and signed the Articles of Capitulation. It is important because it was the last battle of the Revolutionary War, and America became an independent country. The picture below shows one of these battles.
