State your name. State your stand. Write a counterargument + rebuttal paragraph.

Comment on: TWO good aspects (What is effective about this paragraph? What do you like about it? What did you find interesting?). TWO AFI (How can this paragraph be better/ be more convincing? What is lacking?) TWO improvements to language use. (What words/ phrases can your friend include? What writing technique?)

Jeevan Stand: Like Yoda once said " the greatest teacher, failure is." Failure can be the greatest teacher but only if people are willing to learn from it.

Counterargument: Some argue that when someone experiences failure they lose their motivation to carry on whatever they are doing and that it could even end up affecting their confidence and self-esteem. Rebuttal: While I agree that failure can be disheartening I also feel that it is necessary in ones life so that they can properly reflect and learn from their mistakes which ultimately makes them a better person.A grade report released by Prinston University showed that 85 percent of students who had failed in their first year had passed with flying colours when they retook the course. In some cases when a person experiences failure instead of being disheartened they may use it as a powerful force for self improvement. People should not fear failure or shun those who have experienced it. Instead we should openly embrace it and in the process reflect upon why we failed and improve ourselves. After all, failure is what makes us human.

stand: agree "successful failures"
counter: disagree
Although many people do concur that we should learn from failure, there is a small group that thinks otherwise. Failure often results in negative feelings of one. A person who failed at something he had been confident about all along often causes one to lower his self-esteem and may even result in more severe cases such as suicidal thoughts. Imagine a student that has been scoring high marks for Mathematics and in a recent major exam, he failed. This failure would definitely hit him hard with all the high expectations of others and himself. Sometimes, failure may even result in unfavorable effects on one's state of mind. For instance, a study from the Mental Health Organisation shows that the percentage of people getting depression because of failures increased from 12% in 2015 to 30% in 2019. This clearly illustrate how failure could negatively impact one's mental state. Despite the fact that learning from failure is beneficial, there is indeed disadvantages of learning from failure. However, failures are still part and partial of life, everyone should still face their own downfalls and grow through these unique experiences.

These people feel that instead of learning from personal failures, it is better to learn from model examples on how they achieve as failures can cause one to feel discouraged and dejected. Moreover, electronic devices can be used for learning purposes, thus widening their knowledge and improving student's studies.

Remember that time when you're trying to do serious talk with your parents, but they don't take you seriously because "You are still a child"?. Or when you were wronged and wanted to prove yourself innocent with your parents but they just shut you off because "you weren't respecting the elderly"? These are the possible scenarios happening when you're parents still treat you as a child and does not respect your opinion which makes you very frustrated because you are already in your teenage years, am a young adult and have your own opinion. This damages the image of your parents in your mind because you feel that your opinion is not valued, and may over time develop a sense of hatred to your parents, souring your relationship. Thus Parents should not let children be children Also, this mindset of parents may also potentially spoil the child and result in a rebellious attitude in the child once he/she does not get the things he/she wants. For example, when the child does something wrong or breaks something, the parents won't really scold or correct them because "they are still a child" allowing the child continue his/her misdeeds and over time, may develop them into bad habits that they will eventually bring into the adult life. And before long the child will realize his/her own mistakes in the adult life, and would push the blame regarding bad habits on the parents, bearing grudges and annoyance towards the parents for not correcting their wrongdoings while they were still young. Thus souring their relationships. This further supports my stand of disagreeing with parents viewing their child as children despite them being young adults, but should instead treat them as equals with simple respect between one another. This not only does a good job in the child's upbringing but also strengthens the bond between parent and child.

stand: agree
Some have argued that electronic devices may hinder students in their studies as it may cause them to be addicted to social media and online games. When students use electronic devices to help them in their studies, they may get distracted easily due to their temptation to go on social media platforms and due to their lack of self discipline. A case study in Educational Psychology has revealed striking effects of electronic devices in the classroom. The experimenters permitted students to use their cell phones for some class sessions but not for others; analyses showed that students who used electronics in class did worse on midterm and final exams than students who did not. This shows that electronic devices are truly great distractions to students' studies which may be due to their lack of self discipline and temptation to go on social media platforms and play online games instead of focusing on using their electronic devices to help them academically. However, if someone is responsible for his study and knows how to control himself well, he will not tempted to go on other platforms other than using electronic devices to help them academically.Furthermore, students should learn to have self discipline when using their electronic devices. All in all, if one is able to control oneself, electronic devices will not likely to hinder students in their studies.

For example, students tend to pause and check their phones while doing homework or reviewing; which in return can cause them to procrastinate and end up not getting any work done. Actually, this issue mainly depends on the user. Electronic device does not force anyone to stop working unless the individual themselves decide to do so. Moreover, the devices can help us with many external research that cannot be done just by reading books or asking those whom you know. For many of us, while writing an essay or paragraph like we are currently doing, requires a lot of research on the internet, and electronic devices have been helping us do that for ages already. So, to say that electronic devices do not help us is a flawed argument..

Problem solving is easier done when face-to-face. E-mailing can produce more problems than it solves. It might take e-mails hours to hash out a minor detail that could be handled in two minutes in person. You might go back and forth all day on text messages trying to find a solution to a problem that could be solved in an half an hour meeting. Instantaneous replies can build off each another. A question won't sit in a inbox for hours. Hence, although internet communication can be convenient but it cant solve problems as efficient as face-to-face.

While I do agree to some extent, depriving children of their much needed playtime will negatively impact their mental development. For starters, playing helps to cultivate creativity, as children pretend to be doctors, explorers or even fictional characters like superheroes. Limiting their scope to the contents of their textbook will stunt this creative growth. However, the knowledge that they gain could be used to fuel their imagination and enhance their quality of play. As a consequence, something miserable will happen due to the poor ability of accepting failure. As technology is growing at a fast rate, more and more application are developed so that some believe that this gives rise to the chances of students being tempted to use these applications while studying. Although it is true that it may distract students, it still brings
more benefits than harm. It is obvious that the students can study in a faster way when they are using electronic devices, and only a few number of them will get distracted. And as the technology is being developed, the teachers now can
monitor the students when they are studying on the electronic devices. Just as most of my friends in China, they are all having online course now and the teachers can monitor what they are doing on their devices through some certain applications. And they rarely found students doing something else while studying, this has also proved that the students nowadays are having better self-control ability now. So we don’t really need to worry about this problem that much since the most of students are using devices for the right thing and even if a few of them are distracted, the teacher can also monitor and find the problem on time.

With many different applications downloaded into a student's phone, they may feel tempted to check their social media accounts or play a mobile game while in the middle of doing schoolwork. This may cause some of the students to give in to the temptation and forgo the task on hand. A study published in the Canadian Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning showed that 49 percent of the undergraduate students surveyed said that they have been off task by electronic devices. However, this can be easily avoided with discipline. Electronic device also have applications made to stop student from being distracted.

I strongly believe that electronic gadgets lends a helping hand to students in their studies .

On the other side of the coin, electronic device which is a double-edged sword, is also harmful to students in studies as electronic devices are very addictive for students. According to Slick text, 80% of people use their phones before sleeping. 67% of teachers have seen students be distracted by their phones. 47% of parents think their child is addicted to their phone. This clearly shows that students are engrossed with their phones most of the time and that parents and teachers are worrying about the distraction of mobile phones as this could lead to students' attitudes to change from bad to worse and they will also not be concentrating on their studies. However, this can be solved by having parental control application on students electronic devices . Through this, parents can control their children's usage of electronic devices and can block or restrict distracting applications . students can now use their mobile phones for school purposes only . In a nut shell. electronic devices can be both boon and bane.

Failure could make you feel demoralized, anxious and helpless. Many people might give into the pressure of failure and thus ending their lives. Failure could cause health problems like panic attacks. Failure distorts your perception of your goals and makes them seem more unattainable. However, if we overcome the negative emotions of failure, failure can help people improve. As long as we remember that failure is temporary and the key to success, failure will motivate you to try again, minimize your chances of another failure, and increase your likelihood of success.

For example, people may get too distracted due to the internet being readily accessible and available. People often find themselves drifting away and using social media platforms like Instagram where you can scroll away for hours without noticing the sheer amount of time you have spent on the platform. Most of the platforms engage in social media hours to make their content more enticing and addictive. Some people may end up playing instead of studying which was supposed to be their main purpose. An example of this is a psychology study found that the use of electronic devices significantly increases distraction for students, which lowers their attention span and compromises learning in the process. An easy fix to this is that parents can enable "guided access". Using this, parents can deny access to various applications of their choice and limit the use of the phone strictly to study purposes. Without the passwords, students are less likely to be distracted by the entertainment factor of these phones and are obligated to use the piece of technology for solely educational purposes.

Stand: agree
Even though electronic devices benefit students on a daily basis there are disadvantages tied with it as well. The main problem is that electronic devices such as mobile phones are a major distractions to students. If students bring their phones to school they will have the temptation to check their notifications or social media accounts. This causes them to lose their focus during class time and will miss out a lot. This temptation will also become a part of their daily routine and even at home they will be glued onto the screens of their electronic devices.

However this can be countered easily with a variety of options that can help with this addiction at one’s disposal. For example parents could install an application that limits the amount of time a student can use for one day at what time he can use during the day. This will help to get students controlled and to be able to resist the temptation to use their phones during class hours

In class, electronic devices may distract students and may potentially cause them to miss out important details or notes. As more online games are increasingly popular among teens such as ‘Mobile Legends’ and ‘ Call of Duty’, teens may not be able to control their temptations to use their phones in class, hence distracting them. Individually, online sites like ‘Google’ may contain false information, bringing across the wrong message to students. However, this only affects a small group of students. In class, with the proper guidance and instructions from the teachers, all the inappropriate phone uses can he controlled. For example, teachers can impose rules and consequences for the misuse of phones such as confiscation of handphones. Teachers can also safe keep students handphones so no distractions takes place. This may cause students to be more serious and careful when using their phones. With this in place, it can certainly boost the benefits of electronic devices.

Some people seem to think that Electronic devices distract students from their studies. For example, the France government banned handphones in their schools. Before the ban, in one of the schools there were 200 handphones confiscated due to misusage during class time. They also say that the students and teachers are seeing a positive outcome of these bans as the average results of students have gone up. This means that handphones distracted students and caused a negative impact on their results. Although this is true, the pros outweigh the cons significantly as to overcome misusage of handphones, the students just have to be taught responsibility in their usage. The benefits gained from technology would allow for students to do more research for their work. Thus, the electronic devices benefit students more than it creates disadvantages for students.

Stand: Agree
Some might think that failures determine the altitude of one's success in life; how it affects one's self esteem and cause them to put up the white flag inevitably. However, in many instances, this is not the case. it has been shown that many famous individuals have failed mutiple times before achieving soaring sucess. One prominent example is Walt Disney, who was fired by Kansas City Star because his editor felt that he lacked imagination and had no good ideas. Despite of this major setback, he bounced back and grew even more resilient and eventually created Disney, which is now one of the world most famous entertainment company. Ultimately, the philosophy behind is that we are all hard-wired to learn by trial and error. Through trying and failuring, we learned to embrace this and are likely to try new and more difficult goals. Without worrying for the ego-damaging nature of failure, we then can attain success.

Electronic devices can be a major distraction to a student. Some students that have more self-control do not fall into the big traps of social media and mobile games while others who don’t, lose themselves to it. How many of us can resist the urge to see the notification when our phones vibrate. In July of 2018, the French government passed a law banning cell phones in schools. According to CNN, the law passed 62 votes to one. The policy came into effect during the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year and impacts students in kindergarten through the 9th grade. Although France considers phones to be a major issue in school other countries still believe that the issue of students getting distracted by phones can be solved with a little more self-control from the students side. For example here in Singapore schools still believe that with a few rules in place .

With the existence of social media and games, students are easily distracted by them, this neglecting their studies. The constant vibration of the phone whenever a new message from social media arrives, it tempts the student to check on their new messages which will deprive the student's concentration of their work. This will result in student's doing homework half-heartedly. Also, students nowadays are more addicted to mobile games, thus neglecting their studies for their own enjoyment.

Although many people do concur that we should learn from failure, there is a small group that thinks otherwise. Failure often results in negative feelings of one. When a person who fails at something he had been confident about all along, it often causes one to lower his self-esteem and may even result in more severe cases such as suicidal thoughts. Imagine a student that has been passing Mathematics with flying colours and in a recent major midterm exam, he failed. This failure would definitely hit him hard with all the high expectations of others and himself. Sometimes, failure may even result in unfavorable, harmful and detrimental effects on one's state of mind. These effects may stay with him for life. For instance, a study from the Mental Health Organisation shows that the percentage of people getting depression because of failures increased from 12% in 2015 to 30% in 2019. This clearly illustrate how failure could negatively impact one's mental state. Despite the fact that learning from failure is beneficial, there is indeed disadvantages of it. However, failures are still part and partial of life, everyone should still face their own downfalls and grow through these extraordinary experiences.

stand: agree
Some have argued that electronic devices may hinder students in their studies as it may cause them to be addicted to social media and online games. When students use electronic devices to help them in their studies, they may get distracted easily due to their lack of self discipline and they may have the temptation to go on social media platforms. A case study in Educational Psychology has revealed striking effects of electronic devices in the classroom. The experimenters permitted students to use their cell phones for some class sessions but not for others; analyses showed that students who used electronics in class did worse on midterm and final exams than students who did not. This shows that electronic devices are truly great distractions to students' studies which may be due to their lack of self discipline and their temptation to go on social media platforms instead of using their electronic devices to help them academically. However, if someone is responsible for his studies and knows how to control himself well, he will not be tempted to go on other platforms.
Furthermore, students should learn to have self discipline when using their electronic devices. All in all, if one is able to control oneself, electronic devices will not likely to hinder students in their studies.

Although most feel failure is an important part of learning and growing, some think otherwise. These people feel that instead of learning from personal failures, it is better to learn from model examples on how they achieve as failures can cause one to feel discouraged and dejected. Constant failures will also cause people to give up and not dare to try again, fearing the disappointment every time they fail. A study done by the National Center for Biotechnology Information showed that adolescent school failures predisposed girls to depression in young adulthood. However, failures are inevitable. People should learn to embrace it, instead of trying to avoid it.

Stand: Agree
Some might think that failures determine the altitude of one's success in life drastically; how it affects one's self esteem and cause them to put up the white flag inevitably. However, in many instances, this is not the case. it has been shown that many outstanding individuals have failed mutiple times before achieving soaring sucess. One prominent example is Walt Disney, who was fired by Kansas City Star because his editor felt that he lacked imagination and had no good ideas. Despite of this severe setback, he bounced back and grew even more resilient and eventually created Disney, which is now one of the world most famous entertainment company. Ultimately, the philosophy behind is that we are all hard-wired to learn by trial and error. Through trying and failuring, we learned to embrace this and are likely to try new and more difficult goals. Without worrying for the ego-damaging nature of failure, we then can attain success.

agree.
Some people may feel that electronic devices do not help students in their studies as it might act as a form of distraction. However, this can be easily avoided with self discipline. Electronic devices also have applications to stop student from being distracted. I also feel that being distracted by phones is not necessarily a bad thing as sometimes students need a break from their studies so they can come back to it with more energy and focus.

Some argue that using electronic gadgets is a hindrance to studies. An article stated that “ electronic devices significantly increases distractions for students, which lowers their attention span”. This causes many to presume that electronic devices compromises the learning process. However, this is not a major problem as software can be downloaded to prevent students from accessing websites that will divert their attention. For example, i myself am prone to using my phone excessively instead of studying. However, I soon realised that it was an awful habit as i did not have time to my homework and other assignments. Hence, to practice self control i activated the screen time option on my phone. Thus, i couldnt use my phone for more than 3 hours a day By implementing such methods to restrict access, students will be more attentive. Thus, electronic gadgets are beneficial to students’ education.

This is because students may feel the urge to use their electronic devices for other purposes besides studying such as gaming. The notification buzz evokes an irresistible temptation to check it and stay updated. Resulting in students studying desultorily. Furthermore, students may lose track of time and compromise their sleeping time while being indulged in their various electronic devices. This causes them to be sleep deprived and fatigue the next day. Therefore they will not be able to concentrate in class well.

Stand : Agree
Some people believe that electronic devices distract students more than helping them. For example, students tend to pause and check their phones while doing homework or reviewing; which in return can cause them to procrastinate and end up not getting any work done. Frankly speaking, this issue mainly depends on the user since the electronic device does not force anyone to stop working unless the individual decides to do so. No one can hurt you except yourself. Moreover, the electronic equipments can help us with many external kinds of research, revision, reading that cannot be found from physical books or asking those whom you know. For many of us, during essay or paragraph writing like we are currently doing, requires a lot of research on the internet, and electronic devices have been helping us do that for ages already. Besides, many schools and education institutions are already adding the electronic device as a student’s study material after realising how useful it is in today’s world. With the help of these electronic apparatuses, students can get things done quickly and effectively learn each subject using the method that they deem best for their study. Therefore, to say that electronic tools do not help us is a flawed argument.

Stand: agree
Contrarily to these claims, electronic devices are also one of the major distractions that hinder student in their studies. With the existence of social media and games, students are easily distracted by them, thus neglecting their studies. The constant vibration of their phone whenever a new message from social media arrives, tempts the student to check on their new messages which will deteriorate the student's concentration of their work. This will result in student's doing homework half-heartedly. Also, students nowadays are more addicted to mobile games and social media, thus neglecting their studies for their own enjoyment. This will also result in students not doing homework, thus their studies will deteriorate drastically. However, this can be solved by placing restrictions on the usage of their electronic devices. There was a check done by The Strait's Times on 10 schools on student's handphone usage during school curriculum hours after a parent had sued principal of Anglo Chinese School (Barker) for confiscating his or hey child's phone for 3 months. This shows that without the regulations and restrictions by either the parents or the school, students will use their phones uncontrollably at home or during school hours. However, with handphone policies in place, students will be restricted to comply to the handphone policy, and thus would not neglect or hinder their studies.

No
Recall that time when you're trying to do serious talk with your parents, but they don't take you seriously because "You are still a child"?. Or when you were wronged and wanted to prove yourself innocent with your parents but they just shut you off because "you weren't respecting the elderly"? These are the possible scenarios happening when you're parents still treat you as a child and does not respect your opinion which makes you very disheartened because you are already in your teenage years, am a young adult and have your own opinion. This hurts the impression of your parents in your mind because you feel that your opinion is not valued, and would over time develop a sense of hatred to your parents, souring your relationship. Thus Parents should not let children be children Also, this mindset of parents may also potentially spoil the child and result in a rebellious attitude in the child once he/she does not get the things he/she wants. For example, when the child does something wrong or breaks something, the parents wouldn't punish them because "they are still a young" allowing the youngster to continue his/her transgressions and over time, develop them into poor habits that they will eventually bring into the adult world. And before long the child will realize his/her own negligence and would push the blame regarding bad habits on the parents, bearing grievances and resentment towards their parents for not amending their errors while a youth, souring their relationships. This further supports my stand of disagreeing with parents viewing their child as children despite them being young adults, but should instead treat them as equals with adequate respect between one another. This not only does an adequate job in the lass's upbringing but also bolsters the bond between parent and child.

For example here in Singapore schools still believe that with a few rules in place .So phones being a distraction is a small problem that can be solved plus it only affects a small group of people

Cecilia
Stand: Agree

Some may argue that failure is a hindrance to our progress, offering no help, other than being a setback. Failures may obstruct our development, affect our morale and even arouse feelings of frustration, fury and disappointment. For example, when a student who has consistently been doing well in his subjects, fails an exam, he may feel inadequate and discouraged. This may result in a downwards trend and his results may experience a further fall due to die lowered morale. However, after seeing past these possible negative outcomes, failure provides us the opportunity to better ourselves. Failures are hurdles for us to overcome, in order to learn from our weakness. Learning from failure is more substantial than pointless progress that does not teach us anything as it provides us the opportunity to learn from our mistakes. After knowing our shortcomings, we will be able to take precautions and prevent the same mistakes form happening again. Failure is the mother of success; experiencing failure is necessary so we can know our shortcomings and how to overcome them.

stand:agree

In some cases, electronic devices may not help students with their studies. In class, electronic devices may distract students and may potentially cause them to miss out important details or notes. As more online games are increasingly popular among teens such as ‘Mobile Legends’ and ‘ Call of Duty’, teens may not be able to control their temptations to use their phones in class, hence causing them to be distracted, unfocused and inattentive. Individually, online sites like ‘Google’ may contain false information, bringing across the wrong message to students. Imagine yourself understanding the wrong concept and applying it to test and exams.

ZhiDong

Agree
Nowadays, the rate of depression and suicide happening among all ages is increasing. It is not difficult for us to see that learning from failures is not that easy as we thought it was. One main reason is that some peole cannot suffer from the pressure of failures and sustain the loss of the failures. Thereby, unhealthy mental state may be formed as the poor ability of accepting failures of them. Fortunately, here are some methods to solve failures. For instance, schools can hold some activities or speeches for some students to enlighten them how to treat, accept and learn from failures, and society may also spread positive thoughts, teaching publics how to convert failures to the lessons that we can learn from. With the help of these failures, we can conclude the reasons that led to these failures and prevent from making similar mistakes again. Only can we have positive moods to live in this world through these methods to face to the failures that may happen in the future.

stand:agree
However, it is a severe problem that the rate of depression and suicide happening among both youths and adults is increasing. According to research, the main reason is these persons cannot sustain the pressure from failure, and keep suffering from the failure which is as threatening as a demon. Therefore, failure is not something that we can always learn from it. Consequently, something miserable like suicide and mental diseases will happen due to their poor ability of accepting failure. Nonetheless, we are now taking some action to solve these problems, for example, the schools hold some speeches to teach students how to accept failure, the society also spreads positive thoughts to guide everyone to convert failure to something we can learn from. Through these ways, we will have ability to accept failure and definitely it will become valuable experience for us. In conclusion, as long as we can correctly accept the failure and regard it as essential experience, failure will still benefit us a lot.

Despite this, some parents may assert their stance that children have to be disciplined to study so as to achieve academic excellence in the future. While it is true that one’s academic performance plays a paramount part in their future, depriving children of their much needed playtime will have a damaging, detrimental or even destructive impact on their mental development. For instance, playing helps to cultivate creativity. This happens when children imitate doctors, explorers or even their favorite fictional heroes. Narrowing their scope to the contents of the textbook will stunt this creative growth. However, this does not mean that playing and studying cannot go hand in hand. The knowledge that they gain could fuel their imagination and enhance their quality of play. Similarly, by acting out what they have studied, such as when playing doctor, they can better comprehend and digest whatever it is that they have learnt. So for them to truly mature into free, innovative thinkers, a healthy balance of playing and studying should be achieved.

Although most people agree that electronic devices help students in their studies, there is a small number of people who think that electronic devices hinder students in their studies. This minority thinks that students will get addicted to using the devices for entertainment purposes rather than for education purposes, distracting them from their studies, resulting in drastically deteriorating academic results. Students will stay up late just to play a little more of their games, or maybe watch a few minutes of their favourite dramas, and end up waking up early in the morning with only a few hours of sleep, resulting in them being extremely exhausted and unable to concentrate on the lessons. Even though electronic devices can hinder students from their studies by making them addicted to the entertainment the devices provide, there are many simple yet efficient ways to solve the issue. First, the student can exercise some self-control, by managing the time spent on their electronic devices, limiting the duration of time they use the device for non-academic purposes. The student will be able to spend more time on their studies, instead of scrolling through their social medias for hours on end. Other than that, parents can help their children by only giving them the electronic devices when the child has finished his homework, or when the student needs it for research purposes. This may become a motivation for the student to finish their studies so they can use the devices. An app lock can also be enabled on the device so that the student can only spend a limited time on the entertainment applications on the device. There are some parts of electronic devices that hinder the students in their studies, but if the student has discipline and self-control to limit the time spent on the devices, electronic devices will not affect the results of their studies negatively.

Stand : Agree

Some have argued that we will not learn from failure. Failure will only destroy our spirit like a monster. They think there are actually numerous people failing to stand up again after the failure. However, does this really mean we cannot learn from failure? In my opinion, if only one failure can destroy one`s spirit, he or she will never build a great business. Failure is like a test to check whether one has resilience or not. Actually, failure can cultivate one`s perseverance, failure can help one know who his or her true love friends and failure can bring many personal improvement to one. At the same time, it helps to learn to become optimistic. There is an old saying, there is no success without failure. Failure is like a base to build our characteristics to fight for success. Therefore, failure is beneficial to one`s experience and one`s growth.
