         <description><![CDATA[<div>The raid was intended to be the first stage in an elaborate plan to establish an independent stronghold of freed slaves in the mountains of Maryland and Virginia. Even though the didn't succeed, it helped to encourage the south, and convinced slaveholders that abolitionists would stop at nothing to stop slavery. Six years later, slavery was illegal.</div>]]></description>
