Linen Composition

Linen is made from flax plant fibres. It is made up of 70% cellulose, 10% gums, 10% protein, and 10% natural impurities. When kept natural, the color of linen fabric is usually tan, ivory, ecru, and gray. Flax plant fibres make the quality of linen durable if taken care of well, and ultimately light weight and breathable. They also absorb moisture without holding bacteria, and are and can withstand high temperatures. When kept natural and undyed, linen is biodegradable, making it low impact on the environment. However, this could go both ways, as in many scenarios, companies use dyes to make their products more unique and desirable. All of these factors are what makes linen one of the most expensive and desirable fabrics in the world.

The production process of linen begins with planting the flax plant seeds. Then, the second step is waiting for the growth of the plants. After comes the separation of the fibers in order to prepare them for breaking and combing. Then comes the spinning and reeling of the broken and combed fibers. Finally, the last step of the production process is the drying. This nine step process that turns the same flax fiber that we may eat for breakfast into the desirable material we all love is a difficult and time consuming process. This is what ultimately the higher cost of the clothing we know and love today.

Environmental Benefits

One of the major benefits of using flax plant seeds in the composition and production of linen is when kept natural, without any dyes, it is fully biodegradable. This is one of the major contributors that makes linen have a lower impact on the environment. The picture I included above is natural linen fabric, containing many of the popular colors we know and wear today. These make up popular articles of clothing such as the sought after summer linen pants, flowy button down shirts, shorts, etc. Flax is also resilient, meaning it can grow in harsher conditions, making it more resourceful. It uses far less water than other materials such as cotton, and overall is a durable fabric. With good care, linen also lasts longer than most materials, making it a cost-effective and environmentally friendly fabric.

Linen is used in many different products worldwide. It is extremely popular in clothing as I've mentioned previously, such as pants, shirts, etc. It is especially known to be worn in the warmer seasons such as spring and summer due to its breathable and lightweight properties. It is also used in many household products which may surprise you; pillowcases, towels, and even your napkins can be made of linen.

Ralph Lauren, a well known and established brand, has had huge success with its linen wear. It is one of the most popular brands and styles to wear, especially in the summer time. Whether your dressing casually or dressing up, they have all kinds of different styles that are known and loved. Ralph Lauren initially dyed its linen, making it not fully biodegradable. However, in 2022, they partnered with several companies in order to establish a more eco-friendly way of dyeing their iconic clothing. They equipped their flagship stores with textile-coloring technology that allowed customers to dye shirts in store. This was a huge benefit for environmentally friendly solutions as an iconic brand, such as Ralph Lauren, displayed the importance of taking better care of the environment, and ultimately taking steps to become more environmentally friendly.
