Chinese mainly wanted to seek new opportunities in America along with gaining riches. This is why there are a lot of East Asians living in California today. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>When Chinese moved to America (California) to get fortune, they mainly settled in <strong>Chinatown, San Francisco. </strong>They settled here because it was near the Gold Rush location and there were many other Chinese immigrants just like them who wouldn't discriminate against Chinese. America was very different than China, so the culture change was hard for immigrants. Many immigrants took their own food, culture, and religion to Chinatown. That's why Chinatown developed into a place similar to modern China today.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In the book <em>"Dragon Wings"</em>, a 12 year old boy named Moon-shadow moved to Chinatown, California to live with his father during to Gold Rush. Back then Chinese were told that white people "White Demons" were evil and abused the Chinese who came to America. This is was Moon-shadow was taught, which made him scared of whites, and more comfortable in Chinatown compared to any other place in California.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>Why Didn&#39;t Americans like Chinese or Japanese?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Because of the rapid Chinese /Japanese immigration during the 1850s, a lot of manufacturing and laboring jobs were taken from locals. Americans didn't like the idea of their jobs being taken away, so Anti-Chinese sentiment started. There were many murders and beatings of Chinese immigrants in the U.S at this time. <br>This followed up to the "Chinese Exclusion Act&nbsp; of 1882" . This was the first law restricting immigration to the United States. This was because people (mainly in the West Coast) were prone to declining wages and economic downfalls because of Chinese/Japanese&nbsp; workers. <br>&nbsp;<br><strong>QUOTE FROM JOHN MARSHALL</strong><br> The Chinese are - <strong>"a race so different from our own that we do not permit those belonging to it to become citizens of the United States. Persons belonging to it are, with few exceptions, absolutely excluded from our country. I allude to the Chinese race."</strong></div>]]></description>

         <title>How My Family Is Related to This Story</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I chose <em>"Dragon Wings" </em>&nbsp;as my historical-fiction novel because it relates to my family. <br>My grandfathers from both sides of my family were immigrants during the 1940's. On my dad's side, my grandpa immigrated from <strong>Sicily, Italy </strong>when he was in middle school. On my mom's side, both my grandpa and my mom immigrated from <strong>Hong Kong </strong>when my grandpa was 25 and my mom was 4. Both of my families were bullied because they were immigrants and couldn't speak English, and didn't feel very safe in America. Moon-shadow in "Dragon Wings" felt the same discrimination that my family members felt at one point, so I can relate to the story. </div>]]></description>
