  • Every day for Unit 1 you must draw one observational drawing
  • These must be recorded in a physical book, or notepad, or stack of paper. It is up to you where you keep your drawings
  • The drawing can be done in any style, in any medium you like
  • You can spend as long on each drawing as you want
  • The drawings MUST be done from real life, and NOT from a photograph 
  • We recommend a small sketchbook - one you can carry around with you wherever you go! 
  • At the end of the Unit, you will need to document your Drawing a Day Sketchbook on your Personal Archive Padlet. This can be in the form of a video flicking through the pages, or photographs or scans of the contents

Focus on collecting new primary and secondary research relating to this character to strengthen your design and concept.

Think about the role this character will take in the next phase of your life. How will it help you as you progress through University and life beyond? Will it be guiding you, protecting you, or helping you in a different way? Thinking about what your characters motivations are may help you define a direction if you are unsure how to progress.


Examples of secondary research: going to exhibitions, reading books from the library, reading journal articles, searching the internet. Remember to review your sources to ensure they are trustworthy, and to properly record and reference any sources you access using the Harvard Reference System.

  • Evidence of a range of initial ideas relating to what your final puppet might be.
  • Evidence of primary and secondary research, done to develop your ideas and final concept.
    • Secondary research = visiting exhibitions, reading books from the library, looking at information gathered from the internet, etc.
    • Primary research = researched gathered from life by yourself. E.g. Doing interviews, doing observational drawing, taking photos, etc.
  • Evidence of experimentation of materials and process to develop your final puppet
    • How will size, form, materials, colour etc change your puppet?
  • Your final puppet (to be completed for the 20th October). This final puppet should answer the brief (be a puppet based around one of the five provided character archetypes, and be a character that will accompany you over the next phase of your life). It should also be a fully realised concept that has been developed over the course of this project.
