Cambodia
The genocide of Cambodia started April 17, 1975 and lasted until January 7, 1979.
It was the killing over almost 2 million people. They were forced into labor and killed at the hands of the Khmer Rouge. The Khmer Rouge spared no one, they even brutally killed their own if they thought for a split second that they were in their way. The citizens of Cambodia were taken out at gun point and put them to work as slaves creating canals and tending crops. No forms of self expression was allowed. The purpose of the Khmer Rouge was so that Cambodia could become a agrarian utopia (cultivation culture). This also occurred because communism was spreading throughout south east Asia.

The way the world responded was: Vietnam entered and helped stop the invasion but than Vietnam had their own wars and problems to attend to and they had to stop. No other countries helped Cambodia in their time of need. Afterwards, almost 3 decades later, they created the ECCC (Extraordinary Chambers in the courts of Cambodia) and were punishing the leaders of these horrible crimes.

The ways that the Holocaust and the Cambodian Genocide were similar are that because both killing were aimed against all people different then them. In both they were put to work that killed them and the people were killed without a second thought.

Background Information:
In 1994, Rwanda's population was composed of three ethnic groups, the Hutu (85%), Tutsi (14%), and Twa (1%).There was tension between the Hutus and the Tutsis, despite them living very similarily. Hutu exremists accused tutsis of supporting violence. Extremist Hutu leaders were secretly drawing up lists of Tutsi and moderate Hutu leaders to assassinate, and arming and training youth militias, who were responsible for some small-scale massacres. The Rwandan government said the killings were uncontrollable and no one was brought to justice. They characterized tutsis as "subhuman" or cockroaches". In this mindset, Hutu political leaders imported large numbers of weapons and distributed them to militias that supported them.

Response:

The commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces warned his superiors that Hutu extremists were planning a campaign to exterminate Tutsis. In January 1994, he repeatedly asked for more troops, but the requests were denied. They called it an “internal conflict” and discouraged interference. Journalists portrayed it as a Civil War, and didn’t talk about the intentional killing of the citizens. After the killing started, the commander of the UNPF pleaded for more support from the UN, and in fact reduced the forces in the country from 2,500 to 270 soldiers.
Similarities:

This act of genocide was most definitely similar to the holocaust in many horrid ways. They killed people of a certain ethnic group, called the Tutsis, because they were the minority. It is an extreme racist behavior; killing a group of people because they do not have the same beliefs nor ethnic background as most of the people located in Rwanda. These poor people would hide in churches and school until they thought the coast was clear, and yet it wasn’t. The military would wait outside the door of buildings for the people to emerge and they would be slaughtered. The Holocaust did have concentration camps, which Rwanda did not have, but the concept was the same. They wanted to kill people because they did not have the same beliefs and they were the minority. It is inhumane and very sad that governments decide to kill people just because of the color of their skin and the opinions in their heads. The Hutu turned on the tutsi and wanted them dead due to their minority status.

The Hutu turned on the tutsi and wanted them dead due to their minority status.

Due to their standing in the country the Tutsi were deprived of even their basic needs.

Bosnia
A civil war started on April 5, 1992 when Bosnia became independent from Yugoslavia. Bosnian Serbs opposed this and launched a military campaign to gain territory and wipe out the Muslim population in Bosnia. 80% of the 100,00 people who died were Bosnian Muslims . The fighting ceased when NATO intervened and forced the Bosnian Serbs to sign a peace agreement. Many countries helped by assisting those in need of medical treatment and by minimizing the violence during the war, they did this by taking a stand against human rights abuse. This was similar to the Holocaust because they both involved a group of people who hated another group of people due to their believes.

By: Luke, Itzie, and Trinity
~BACKGROUND INFORMATION~
Burma's Muslim Rohingya minority has faced severe discrimination and persecution, escalating violence, forced statelessness, and myriad restrictions at the hands of the state. Rohingya population has suffered mass atrocities including crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing. Since 1982 to present day. This is happening because they are considered immigrants and not citizens.

~HOW DID THE WORLD RESPOND?~
Organizations are concerned about the severity and scope of the mass atrocities committed against the Rohingya population, as well as the prospects for future reconciliation. The lack of accountability thus far for the human rights violations could fuel the risk of future atrocities. People are also concerned about those displaced because the conditions there are not safe enough to facilitate returns of those who fled.

~SIMILARITIES TO HOLOCAUST~
The similarities between both the Burma crisis and the devastating holocaust is the religious conflict of 'we are true/just while you are horrid/infectious. The conflict was directly connected to ethnicity and caused a divide in the community. This resulted in the 8 stages of Genocide, soon making the accused party a hunted population.

Like the Holocaust, the current conflict in Syria started small, but has escalated to moral crimes. Such example is the recent chemical attack that has provoked a military strike from the US.
