Something we see a lot in this chapter is we find out a lot more about the school and how it operates. There is a founder named Ayn Rand who is a big advocater for the school and helps them grow in popularity with more buildings and people. Another thing we see in this chapter is the protagonist seems to have a crush on a girl and he describes her as a “redhead with beautifully arched eyebrows and pouty lips.”(65) This shows good character development by showing he can find that special someone in his life.

This quote shows how well he did on his “Summer Dance” work and how the main judge, Hemingway, tells him he did very good. We can imply the end of the quote to today, that can help us with our works in English.

“I didn’t want Ernest Hemingway’s advice, I wanted his attention.” (Pg. 136)
This shows that he either wants to work harder to get his attention and be notices or that even though he is happy, he is ungrateful for the advice that Hemingway gave him.

1. We miss some of the deeper meanings in the text and miss out on important info or we do not recognize it.
2. We can prepare better by writing better journals. The journals help us get the main info that we need and they are even better prepared if we have quotes and important things that are in the book.

- As a group, we did not really enjoy the book all to well for a couple of different reasons.
- One of the reasons why we did not like the book is because it was very repetitive in what it was trying to get at and we wish it would have switched up the message.
- Another reason is because there is no real action in the book and the narrator is just recalling his life in detail.

One of the themes portrayed throughout the novel, Old School, by Tobias Wolff is Competition. The school had writing competitions each year to see who would have the “best” work. For example, “George Kellogg won the audience with Robert Frost.” George was a rival of the narrator and they went toe for toe each year competing to write the best text.This competition was taken very seriously by all students. This theme is very important to me because of Chaminade. I find many similarities between our school and theirs. For instance, we have Skylight throughout the year and the best works are included in the book Skylight.

1. John Di Stefano - I would not recommend this book to anyone because it was very boring and plain compared to the other books that were options. I think this book should get off the list entirely because I know nobody that enjoyed it.

2. Karl Holle - I definitely would not recommend the book. This has got to be the worst book I have ever read in Chaminade. There is almost no action and the book is insanely boring. It was also about school which is something I ideally don’t want to read about.

3. Antonio Ruffo- I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone because I feel that it is very vague and boring to read. It is all about school which is something most people are tired of. However, I liked how it reminded me of Chaminade and my life here.
