Type A is divided in subtypes, The subtypes are determined by two glycoproteins on the virus surface, haemagglutinin (HA) (H1–H18) and neuraminidase (NA) (N1–N11). Antibodies against these glycoproteins are associated with immunity against influenza. Type B viruses cause less severe disease and tend to cause fewer complications than some type A viruses. Type C viruses cause some human disease but only a few outbreaks. Type D viruses primarly affects cattle and other animals, but is not known to infect people to cause illness.
