The landscape of education is substantially changing. With technology advancing at such a fast pace, education is changing the way curriculum and methodology are delivered to students. In contrast to traditional learning, distance learning education has risen and continues to increase across the world as a form in which students can access education through online instructional delivery systems. Bruder (1989) (as cited in Casey, 2008, p. 45) states that the Department of Education defines distance learning education as, “the application of telecommunications and electronic devices which enable students and learners to receive instruction from some distant location”. Distance learning education spans over three centuries in the U.S. beginning in 1852, with the use of the United States Postal Service as a way to send coursework to institutes, to achieving academic recognition in 1892, when the University of Chicago created the first college-level distance learning program (Casey, 2008). Then in 1920, radio broadcasting a stunning new technology, reached an audience far beyond any centralized classroom (Casey, 2008). By 1934, courses were being broadcast on television in the University of Iowa (Casey, 2008). In 1970, “the first fully televised college courses were created, licensed, and implemented by Coastline Community College and broadcast by KOCE-TV to other educational institutions in Orange County, CA” (Casey, 2008, p. 47). Soon satellite systems brought education to some of the most distant locations in the United States. The first state educational satellite system, Learn/Alaska, was created in 1980 (Casey, 2008). With the domestication of computer technology, the World Wide Web emerged evolutionizing distance learning education even more. In 1991, the World Wide Web, developed by Tim Berners-Lee introduced the high-speed broadband transmission, in which distance education over the internet became the “next educational frontier” (Casey, 2008, p. 48). From this, Blackboard and WebCT software programs emerged, allowing students and teachers to communicate and facilitate the class efficiently.

For instance, online courses will help students save money avoiding to commute to school or paying for housing (“10 Advantages to Online Learning”, n.d.). Furthermore, some institutions are accepting credits taken from massive open online courses (MOOC) an alternative education program that teaches students about a particular content at a free or very low cost rate. MOOC is a new advancement in online learning is a way to connect and collaborate with digital skills which is important to today’s job industry (Cormier, 2010).

One of the most convenient traits is of distance learning education is that it can be done at any time of the day as long as students meet the deadlines of assignments. Students have the freedom to work at their own pace, balance school, work, and personal commitments (“Te Advantages of Taking Online Classes”, n.d.). Students also have access to view all work and assignments as soon as they are enrolled, which helps them see how each assignment builds on one another and makes the final assignment or product more relevant and understanding (“Ten Advantages of Taking Online Classes”, n.d.).

Active participation is an essential characteristics that traditional and online learning should have in order for students to feel a sense of belonging. Online learning provides different ways in which students communicate, learn, discuss topics, or ask questions. For instance, Class Cafe is an amazing tool that connects classmates and professors in regards to questions or resources that may be beneficial to students. Online learning uses resources such as flipped learning, a technology tool that uses quizzes, videos, discussions forums to keep students engaged (“Characteristics of Online learning”, n.d.). Using these kinds of resources will actively engage students in innovative ways that help students tech savvy and prepare them for the job industry

Developing digital literacy skill is such an important quality that individuals need to have in order to succeed in today’s job industry. Students are surrounded by technology everywhere and its important to introduce them to new technology resources that are beneficial to their education. For instance, online learning deals with writing papers, taking quizzes, and presenting information using a variety of technology tools. Sometimes a professor might require students to present information using a presentation technology resources other than powerpoint. This allows students to have the freedom to browse and navigate new technology resources such as Padlet, Prezi, Slideshark, Haiku Deck, and much more (Croxton, 2017). Teachers and students will benefit from requirements like these because students will learn new resources and teachers will have to adapt to all resources that students choose. It will help both parties become knowledgeable of resources that are beneficial to education.

Distance learning education programs can apply from primary to postsecondary education. These programs are evolving everyday with the advancement of technology. As a future counselor, it is important to keep up with the latest technology tools available for students and teachers. Implementing professional development workshops that gear towards online learning is essential for student success. Teachers need to adapt to new era of the digital world in order to prepare students for the future. Counselors have the responsibility to research and offer technological resources to educators. Modeling new technology resources is a great way to interact with both students and teachers in the online setting. With students being so knowledgeable with technology, allowing students to become researchers and presenters of new technology resources will allow them to become educators to their own classmates. This is a great way of collaboration between educators and students. This will not only build rapport between teachers and students, but it will allow educators to become facilitators as students take the leadership role in their education. Building these experiences will help educators and students develop digital literacy skills and prepare them for the new era of the world.

Online programs are ensuring the success of participants in ways that traditional classes cannot. According to Friedman (2018, para. 2) “4,700 colleges and universities, more than 6.3 million students in the U.S. – most of whom were undergraduates – took at least one online course in fall 2016, a 5.6 percent increase from the previous year” This indicates that if more students are continuing to take an online courses, then the characteristics that online course offer are working on behalf of students and educators. Some universities and colleges offer online degree programs at both undergraduate and graduate level which helps students who have other obligations or responsibilities continue their education without having to postpone it. The flexibility is such a great characteristic that allows students to work at their own pace and have 24/7 access to course work. This helps student structure work around school rather than vise versa. The online setting is a new form of communicating and learning. It exposes students to navigate new technology resources, communicate in a variety or ways, and ask questions without being shy or embarrassed.
