This background is a Toy Soldier that appears to be a child holding a gun, marching. The whole background would read, "Obedience is Key", which applies that the manipulation among kids, and teenagers, creates a deadly arsenal of child soldiers.
This being said it is saying that obedience, also known as control is vital. Pg. 165 in A Long Way Gone has a sentence I enjoy. "None of this is your fault." This Sentence says that It wasn't the child's fault for obeying the war. It was manipulation, and through that caused destruction.

A Long Way Gone is about Ishmael Beah, the author of the memoir, who has dealt with mental and Physical trauma his whole childhood, and has witness and acted in the killing of hundreds, maybe even thousands. Beah has not only done this, but he has had clouded judgement for a long time. In addition, Beah has dealt with anguish, and didn't even realize it, yet he still rose. Furthermore, He went from demented to saved and with one rehabilitation center at that. Now he works as an author In New York. Also, Ishmael, in summary, is a young man who once had a common childhood with friends, family, and love but one day he lost all of that to a war that was inevitable. He grew up addicted to several drugs, and even kept a survival based mentality throughout his childhood. In conclusion, Those who read the memoir should know that there is more going on in the world than what we see, and should do something about it.

This picture represents the very beginning; this is when Ishmael left with his friends, and brother to go to Mattru Jong, for a talent show for his friends'. This is where it all started, where everything went down hill. "Rebels" throughout Sierra Leone began war to overthrow the government, but in the process they began to kill civilians all over. Ishmael had no Idea this would be his last day of a peaceful childhood, and having his home. This is significant because it shapes who you are as an adult. A direct quote from the passage reads, "We didn't know that we were leaving home, never to return."

This picture represents the ending of his friendships. He lost all his friends to the very same war that separated him from his family, and stole his childhood. A direct quote reads, "It was during that attack in the village of Kamator that my friends and I separated. It was the last time i saw Junior, my older brother." For him to lose all of his friends, and family left him alone and vulnerable. This was a key reason to how he ended up a boy soldier. He had no where else to turn to except for death.

This picture represents his fall. This is where he has been engulfed in manipulation, and revenge. He has been told over and over that the Rebels are the ones taking everything from him. This led him into a rampage which triggered earlier in his recruit. He had no other choice in his mind. The DQ reads, "You will get use to it; everybody does eventually." This only further proves my point; the child soldiers were and are kids who are hardened, and manipulated to do the dirty work of the corrupted, and demented.

This picture represents his rise in his childhood. He went to rehab for several months and put the staff through many trials. He would seem like a lost cause, but with slow and steady relationships, and love, so much can feel possible. This is what he realized as he slowly developed love for a women by the name of Esther. This was so important because she changed his life. A DQ reads, "It was the last time I saw her. I loved her but never told her (Esther)." This is his exact quote. He questioned her goals in rehabilitation, and why she goes through what she goes through. It was a beautiful thing to read about his improvement, and progression

This is the greyhound. A bus that people take to leave from state to state, and maybe even the country. This picture represents the final chapter of Ishmael's memoir; the transition. He decided he no longer could bare to be in Sierra Leone, so he wasn't going to come back, ever again. He had to risk a lot to leave, but successfully did so. He was going to have to take a bus to evacuate the country in its dire situation. This is important because he was willing to leave everything behind to start over, and with that came the new possibility of many other obstacles.

There are three different lyrics from this song that represents Ishmael's journey.

Lyric 1: It's like a jungle sometimes. This lyric represents his childhood throughout the war.
Lyric 2: I can't take the smell, can't take the noise. This can represent Ishmael's perspective; all the screaming and gun shooting, and all of the death, and burning flesh. I myself would not be able to take that torture.
Lyric 3: Sometimes I think I'm goin' insane. This can represent his whole journey. It was as horrendous as a nightmarish limbo. IT seemed to work in a pattern and made Ishmael feel like he was going insane.
