Aida Soluva´s art
2. I think it is very interesting that you can turn almost anything into art as long as you assemble it well.

Question:
If there were more sustainable art out there, how would it impact the planet?

Artist Response:

I would describe Aida Sulova´s art as unique and impactful. I consider her work unique because you do not see a face on the side of a garbage can everyday. While her work stands out, it also spreads awareness about waste, specifically plastic, and how it impacts the planet.

After admiring her art, Aida Sulova´s work makes me feel inspired because it reminds me of how we mistreat our environment, which gives me the feeling I should take steps to help out the Earth.

I definitely think Aida´s art is successful because her mission is to bring attention to the large amount of waste humans create and I certainly noticed how much trash is in her art. Not only does Aida seek to spread awareness, she also wants her viewers to create change after seeing her work. Looking at her photos evoked a sense of duty in me that I have to help the planet, which means her message reached me.

While I do not have many critiques for her work, I would say the mouth on the trash can is not obviously a mouth. Perhaps she could change the colors on the face so it stand out more.

Overall, I think Aida´s art can make a huge difference in how people see garbage and I really admire her.

I would describe this artist’s work as bright, yet dark, and contrasting. Both in the artwork and in its message. My favorite of his “Washed Up” works is the photograph with orange and reds contrasting the deep greens and blues of the ocean. It does look like sunset; but at the same time it’s sad that we are able to take these photos. The items are not where they belong. His image “Brotes” of toothbrushes among plants is heartbreaking. The brushes are similar in shape and size to the cattails. This reminds me of instances in which animals and sealife mistake our trash for their food. Alejandro is taking the role of these nonhuman creatures’ voice. They can’t speak up about what humans are doing. Alejandro’s work is a reminder that this is not only our planet. The way that people treat this Earth is disgusting and selfish. I think the imagery he portrays can be seen as beautiful or as crude. This work can be successful but only if the artist is actively cleaning up waste. Taking photographs may spread a ¨message¨ but the real problem is still there; the garbage plaguing nature. I would encourage artists who advocate for a greener Earth to work towards cleaning up what they are photographing more than they are.

I would describe Aida Saliva's art as unique and impactful. I consider her work unique because you do not see a face on the side of a garbage can everyday. While her work stands out, it also spreads awareness about waste, specifically plastic, and how it impacts the planet. After admiring her art, Aida Saliva's work makes me feel inspired because it reminds me of how we mistreat our environment, which gives me the feeling I should take steps to help out the Earth.

El Anatsui - This artist's work is very unique and cool as well and he uses carved or flame-burned wooden sculptures and cut lines and symbols in them with color, the symbols also resembled Uli. My emotional response is that this is very cool to see someone trying to revive the craft and traditions of African nations mostly from Ghana and Nigeria. I think this work is very successful as he's trying to revere the traditions of these two nations as they were both nations that struggled for their independence. A critique I have for this artist's work is that he will make different types of structures using different materials other than his wood sculptures and metal sculptures. I think this artist is making great art for Ghana and Nigeria and very much appreciates his work.

I find her work interesting because you do not see a face on the side of a garbage can everyday. Sulova’s art stands out of the rest of the art pieces, because she is using materials that you wouldn't usually use to make art. In conclusion, I think Aida´s art can make a difference in the art world by using trash to make art.

Again, I didn't really try to make a statement but I used contrasting colors, alternated the direction of the objects to the side of the book, and had them go from biggest to smallest to make it look nice.
4. The piece is made with found objects that I already had.
5. My main influence was Emily Blincoe.
6. They are tied to hair clips using thread.

2. What is the artistic statement that you are trying to make with your work?
The statement I wanted to make is that many of the items we dispose of can be used and enjoyed. Not only art but also clothing/accessories!

3. How did you use design elements, materials, and composition to make this statement to the audience?
Most people wouldn't think of trash had the capability to be something so cute. Used items are looked on as "gross" or unable to be repurposed. I made something wearable and nice looking to prove this wrong.

4. How does your statement connect to the unit’s big ideas?
I took the unit's idea of turning trash into art a step further with creating items that are functional, not decorative.

5. What were your influences when making the work?
My greatest influence was upcyclers, people who take old things and make clothes, jewelry, etc. I think it's so cool that some people have the skills to turn a blanket into pants or fabric scraps into a stuffed animal. I've always wanted to do creative work like this.

here is an example:
f.6x2 shop

6. How does your work reflect the work of the artists we studied?

I think my work is different than that of the artists we studied. We are all trying to reduce waste but the end product is different. I think it's great that there are so many varying ways to create sustainable art.

These snowflakes were designs by Marion Nichols, or the "Snowflake Lady" at the City Museum in St. Louis.

I created them out of papers that were in the recycling, I cut them to the right margins, folded them, and cut the pattern. I suppose I'm trying to say, that a project doesn't have to be huge for it to still be beautiful. It doesn't have to be made of brand new materials either.

I made these out of recycled paper, so that is telling my artist what I described above.

Using paper that would have been taken the next time the recycling would have been taken connects to the unit's big idea since it is all about using "trash" to make art.

When I was younger, my dad would take me to the City Museum in St. Louis, and one of my favorite things to do there would be to go to the "Snowflake Lady" on the second floor and make a paper snowflake while she told us stories. We bought a couple books of her designs and I used that influence to make my snowflakes.

The artists we looked at were all about using what was already existing, using trash, making a point. I think that by using paper that would've been recycled supports what the artists were trying to say.

This piece is made out of old t-shirts that could also be recycled to use as cleaning rags. I cut the shirt into rectangular strips and rounded out one edge to make it appear like a petal, then arranged them in a circle to look like a flower. The artistic statement I am making with this is that almost anything can be art, it doesn't have to be with paper and pencil, but could even be an old t-shirt! I was able to make this statement to the audience simply by using the t-shirts as my material of choice. My statement connects to the units big ideas as it is being resourceful of items I already had at home, creating sustainable art!! My influences while making the art was my pile of old clothes that I initially had for sewing to make into new clothes I could wear more often, or stuff that needed to be hemmed or fixed. My work reflects the work of the artists we studied, as all of them have one thing in common which is creating art out of what we can, without creating waste.

The statement I'm trying to make with my work is that you can create art out of anything and give old or worn things new life through art.
3. I used screws I found in my garage. I sorted them by size and the kind/shape/color they were, and then I arranged them and put a certain amount of space and placement between each one.
4. My statement is similar to some of the others, as I'm trying to show how old things can be given new life and be made into something beautiful.
5. My influences when making this art was the teacher examples that used found objects and arranged them in certain ways, as well as Alejandro Duran and Aida Sulova’s artwork.
6. My work reflects the work of the artists we studied because our artist statement's are similar and I used found objects to create art, just like they did.

Once I got my supplies I went straight to it, at first I wanted to make it just green and yellow but I didn't have enough of those colors to fill the whole thing but I made the best out of it.

Aida Sulova

Her work is amazing to me. It's very beautiful and I love how it calls attention to real world issues that need to be addressed. I was really moved by her art and I was surprised at the amount of plastic actually there. I think it really brings to light, how much plastic we waste and how much of it ends up contaminating the world. I think her work is very successful in conveying her message. It really shows the magnitude of the issues in the world. I think using color in her art would actually grab more people attention and more people would see her message. I absolutely love how she incorporates herself into her artworks.
