-Create an immersive experience for students to get them engaged and intrigued by creating an underwater environment. To do this you could; put blue crepe paper over the windows to block out the light and create a blue cast on the classroom, have toy fish and sea creatures as a tactile element, have a bubble machine, have clear/white balloons to represent bubbles. Then have words set out such as wonder, dream, fly, experiment. Next, to elicit the students ideas, ask them questions that encourage them to make links between the environment and the vocabulary.

-Do a predictive write with the students based on the immersive activity and looking at the book cover. You could model this by doing a group write or mind-map on the board, capturing students ideas as well as unanswered questions.

-Give students the lyrics to Calypso by John Denver, play the song and read through the lyrics together. Enlarge the lyrics on the board and ask for comments about the song. Prompts could be, what is this song about?
