Multi-imaging in music videos is used to highlight that the artist is the main focus of the video. It also gives the music video a more high-tech and modern feel. A good example of multi-imaging in a music video is in will.i.am's 'This is Love', where he appears on a lepton screen in front of himself, and both versions of him are singing the song.

A good example of playback and lip sync is the video for Someone like you - Adele. In this video Adele is walking along the bank of the river Thames. This is different to miming and lip sync because the video contains cuts and transitions such as fades. This is a good example of lip syncing as the video is synced with Adele miming the lyrics to her song whilst walking down the river.

This is where the music video is filmed in one continuous shot, and the artist 'sings' the song the whole way through. Really, the artist is miming a long to their own song, giving the viewer the impression that they are singing it. when music videos are filmed in one shot, the artist normally has to rehearse the routine for the video for a long time, and the film it multiple times to get the best outcome. a old example of a music video filmed in one shot with miming is Wannabe - Spice Girls. There is a whole dance routine which goes with them singing in the video which was rehearsed and then filmed.

Effects are generally used in music videos to give it a more futuristic feel, even though it can also be used to make the video look like it is set in the past too. Effects are also used to enhance the feel of the video. A good example of when effects are used in a video is the Pump Up The Jam - Techtronic music video. This video uses green screening the whole way through. This gives the video the right look for the song, as the song uses a lot of synthesisers and is classed as electronic dance music. the effects and green screening used helps the video match the song.

A good example of cutting to the beat in a music video is 96 F**kries - JME. This song has a very punchy beat. Cutting to the beat is when different shots are cut in time to the beat of the song. This enhances the music video by making it look like it matches the song perfectly. this technique is used a lot in dance and rap music videos to give the viewer a real feel for the song and to emphasise the punchiness of the beat.

An obvious way of referencing could be using lyrics or wearing the same clothes as another famous artist.

ShowMe Love - Robin S. I have chosen this video because i think its one of the best songs to be released in the 90s. The video represents the artists image in dance music, as the video is set in a club with Robin S singing on a stage. It also shows that she is quite classy as well, as she is dressed well and is behaving in a sensible manor during her performance. The video reflects the music itself as its set in a club, and it is a dance song. The video shows the fashion trends of the time and shows the audience that the artist is up to date with trends and even setting them. The quality of the footage is good but could be better. i think this was done on purpose to add to the feel of the video, making the viewer feel like they're actually in the club. There are a lot of close up shots and a lot of shots where the camera zooms in on the artist singing. this highlights that she is the main focus opt the music video. there are also a lot of pan shots which show all of the people dancing in the club. The shots are cut to the beat which adds to the feel of an upbeat dance song. There no special effects used in the video, just lots of fast cuts. The style of the video is very representative of the era that it was produced in, it was made to look good then and it still works now.

INXS - Need You Tonight. I have chosen this song as it is one of the most famous songs of the era. The 80's was an era of dance music, which is strongly reflected in this music video. there is lots of green screening used and quick cuts, which suits the synthesised style of music. The music itself is very happy and sexual, which reflects the era as the 80s was famous for being a party decade. there are lots of shots of the artists wearing very fashionable clothes at the time, presenting them as icons. This shows how the artists wanted to be perceived. The footage isn't of the highest quality, partly to give the video a vintage look, but also because green screening wasn't as advanced back then as it is now. The types of shots include many close ups on faces and items of clothing and other body parts. this sexualises the video which is what the artist wants, as the lyrics to the song are very suggestive as well. The cuts are usually in time to the music in the video, which gives it more of a punchy and powerful feel. The special effects used is green screening, which is used throughout the video, to give it an abstract feel to match the sound.

Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall. This song was very popular in the 70s, as this is when Pink Floyd came to fame. The artists themselves aren't displayed in the video, which is symbolic of their image. they didn't like to show off about their music or present themselves as superstars, they wanted to convey messages through their music and this music video is a prime example of how they tried convey their messages. Their music was seen as very trippy and psychedelic as they like to indulge in psychedelic drugs, so much that one band member went missing for six years after taking too much LSD. They did not try to follow any trends or set any trends during their time of fame, yet they were seen as fashionable and cool. the quality of the footage is good and is filmed extremely well. the video tells a story of a boy being told off at school and how the pupils want to revolt against the system, which matches the lyrics to the song perfectly. A number of different shots are used including close ups, mid shots, long shots and pans. The editing techniques used give it a scary look and feel, which is what was intended. it gives the viewers a feel for what the characters in the video must be feeling. there are some special effects which are used to enhance the scary feeling of the video. The style of the video is scary but gives a feeling of self confidence as the children over come the evil teacher in the end.

Hey Joe - Jimi Hendrix. I have chosen this song because it is my favourite song from the 60's and its by an artist which defined that era. the music itself is very psychedelic, which was inspired by all of the drug use at the time. Hendrix himself did a lot of LSD before he went on stage and whilst recording his music. This will explain the psychedelic experience he provided for the audience in the live performance in the music video from 1967. he was a very fashionable man and set trends which the public followed like a religion. the quality of the footage is not the best it could be as it was a filmed live performance. It portrays his live performances extremely well as it gives the viewer the feeling that they are watching him perform live. Most of the shots in the video are close ups of his face or guitar, this is because Hendrix was famed for his talent of playing the guitar and his unique style of singing. these shots help to focus the video on Hendrix, as he is what the audience wants to see. the cuts are usually on beat with the song which gives the video a feeling which is more than just a recorded performance. there are no special effects used in the video as they were not widely used back then. The live performance style of the video highlights how much of a true performer Jimi Hendrix was, which gives the viewer a true feel for his music.

I have chosen Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry. This is because it was one of the most famous sons of the 50's and it identifies the era. The video for this song is a live performance os the song by Chuck Berry himself. This helped portray his image of being a talented musician and a fun and happy stage performer. The video also helped to promote the new era of rock 'n' roll which was taking over. he helped to show it could be classy as well as rebellious. he also showed that rock 'n' roll artists can look smart and respectable, as he always wore a suit and bow tie. The footage in the music video is not of the best quality because cameras weren't as advanced back then, it i all filmed in one take and in one continuous shot. no editing techniques were used as it was all shot in one continuous shot. There was also no special effects used as they didn't exist back then. The style that was used in this video was the standard at the time, which is just a recording of a live performance.

Jennifer Lopez - Jenny from the Block

I have chosen this R&B song because i think its one of the most iconic songs in this genre. This music video was directed by Francis Lawrence. The video was meant to portray how the media was invading her life and her relationship with Ben Affleck at the time. The video was filmed in Los Angeles, USA and was released on November 5 2002. There is a second cut of the video which shows her performing the chorus to 'Loving You' in a building, instead of Styles P and Jadakiss's raps. she hen sees paparazzi watching her and it cuts back to 'Jenny from the Block. This is a message to the media to get out of her life, even though that is the cost that comes with fame. Lopez tried to have the video blocked from being shown on MTV and VH1 in 2004, and Affleck said that starring in the music video nearly ruined his career.

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit.

I have chosen this music video because its one of the most iconic songs and music videos in recent history. its believed that they chose the director for the video because his test real was so bad that they though the video would look more 'punk' and 'less corporate'. This was Samuel Bayer's first ever directing job, and it gave him massive recognition and boosted his career. The budget for this music video is estimated at $30,000 to $50,000. The music video topped multiple charts for best music video which helped to boost the sales of the already popular song. The video has been shown on every music channel and is available to watch on Youtube. 'Smells like Teen Spirit' sold 30,000 copies on CD in the UK, reaching number 11 on the UK singles chart. when this song was released digital download was not available.

Eric Prydz - Call On MeI have chosen this music video because it is an iconic song as well as an iconic video. The video attracted a lot of attention upon its release, which meant great publicity for the song and artist. but the video also attracted some negative attention from the public, as it was seen as too graphic to show on TV. There are actually two versions of the video, one which is cut to make it viewable during the day, and another version which hasn't been cut and is shown late at night. the uncut version is far more sexually suggestive, which a lot of people don't realise. The music video managed to boost the songs sales massively, as well as the careers of the dancers and artist. This video has been shown on numerous music channels on TV such as MTV and 4Music. It is also shown on the internet through Youtube and other video streaming websites. In the year it was released, 335,000 copies were sold in the UK. This was only in CD format as digital downloading was not available at its time of release.

we discussed a number of promotional benefits in our group, the main one being how the artist/ group wants to get their name and song out there for people to see. this can be done by putting it on Youtube and advertising it on different social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. Promoting songs like this can gain the artist more attention from record labels or other promotors. It can also give existing record labels and promotors more attention from the general public. Also, other products can be promoted in music videos, which means that other companies can gain promotion from a music video that they have nothing to do with. promoting like this can also mean that the artist can market a certain image for themselves and can create awareness for their music.

The main purpose of the music video is obviously to promote the song, but it can be used to promote the artists other talents, such as dancing, fashion design and many other things. Music videos can also be used to give the listener a deeper understanding of the song. A lot of music videos are used to create a reaction from the public, which can be political. A good example of this is the music video for 'Titanium must go - David Guetta Vs Queen'. Music videos can also be used to give the listener an insight into the artists life and what they go through.

Music videos can generate money for the record label because it is technically advertising them by playing the song. they will also get the logo of the company put into the video for further promotion and sometimes the artists names the label in the song. Adverts are also shown before music videos on Youtube, which could generate more money for the company. A lot of money is made from product placement in music videos, because companies will pay the label to have their product shown in the video. Good examples of these are drinks, cars , watches and headphones. When watching music videos on youtube there are links to other songs on the side, these usually come from the same record label that the video you are watching comes from.

They also own the copy right to the song and video so can sue anyone who copies them. songs can also be pre ordered before they are released which can bring in more income for record labels. companies will also pay to show the music video on certain channels in different countries. if channels want to play a music video they will have to pay to play it. a good example of this is Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' which made $500 million from license fees.
