The fictional character, Matilda, is a role model to all. Matilda demonstrates strength due to the fact that her biological parents were not people that she could call family, and the fact that she had to rely on herself throughout most situations, and stood up for what she believed in. This same strength can be shown through the quote, "Nothing is at last sacred, but the integrity of our own mind", which Emerson stated in the passage 'Self-reliance'. This quote relates to Matilda because she continues to stand for what she believes in even through the burden of her parents.

In the song, 'This is Me', from The Greatest Showman, it portrays the idea that all "oddities" one may have should not only be accepted, but celebrated. This song was written to motivate all to believe in themselves, and to be proud of who they are. This is shown by the line, " I am brave, I am bruised, I am who i'm meant to be, this is me." These lyrics parallel to the ideas of Emerson because in his passage, 'Self-Reliance', he encourages one to empower yourself, and to believe in the powers you have, and not rely on those surrounding you. Emerson also explains the fact that many successful and important people we know today as heroes, were misunderstood at first.

In the passage, 'Self-Reliance', Emerson touches on the fact that many great thinkers were misunderstood in their time. " Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and
Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took
flesh." Another example of an important figure in our society is Martin Luther King Jr. He was an American civil rights campaigner, that led the non-violent civil rights movement. Many critics didn't agree with his views, and the way he felt in which the world needed to change. Although we today view him as a hero, many criticized his views and didn't understand his arguments.
