Matilda demonstrates strength due to the fact that her biological parents were not people that she could call family, and the fact that she had to rely on herself throughout most situations, and stood up for what she believed in. This same strength can be shown through the quote, "Nothing is at last sacred, but the integrity of our own mind", which Emerson stated in the passage 'Self-reliance'.
