The Use of Potatoes

The Americas grew foods that couldn't grow in Europe. Potatoes are a prime example of this. The Europeans had to adapt to foods like this in order to survive while exploring away from Europe. Potatoes, as well as corn, were one of the best discoveries made in the Americas by Europe. When they were taken back to Europe many people feared that it caused diseases. This was a consequence many Europeans did not want to deal with. After a failed wheat harvest in England, the cost for wheat in Europe rose and people could not afford it. Despite the beliefs of disease, potatoes became a popular food that the Old World consumed after not being able to afford other foods. Long term effects of the potatoes were that they helped Europe and other places in the Old World get through famines. They became large in production and kept many people alive in Europe as it did with the explorers. After seeing the benefits from potatoes, many places such as France began to grow them, however, as a negative effect, many peasants would steal the food and plants.

The Americas had many animals that were new to the Europeans. The New World and The Old World had different animals than those found in the Americas. An Important animal to look at is the Horse. Horses were brought over to the Americas from Europe. These large and bulky mammals were used by the Spanish throughout history in war to intimidate other people. For the Native Americans, Horses became incredibly useful. They helped bring a new way of intimidation during war, allowed people to travel at a greater pace, helped people carry and pull large and heavy items. At first the Natives coming into contact with horses was good but it went beyond just seeing them. Horses were a new animal for them to experience but also to use. The most widespread impact they made was carrying and transporting new food. This majorly impacted the Europeans because it allowed them to share their new discoveries and possessions all across Europe. For the Native Americans, one of the most impactful thing horses did for them was provide a new way to hunt. Horses allowed them to travel at a greater speed as well as transport any necessary tools or animals.

Unlike other foods, because of the high amounts of calories in potatoes, not as many of them had to be grown which means that more land could be used for other purposes. Potato plants were also tubular which means they were hollow like a tube. They were rich in vitamins and helped prevent scurvy which was something the Europeans encountered a lot. Short term e

Throughout the Columbian Exchange many diseases were spread from the Old World to the New World and sometimes the other way around. Influenza was one of the illnesses brought from Europe to the Americas. It is also known as the flu. Short term effects include congestion, sore throat, and fevers as well as muscle aches. These all sound like common symptoms in today's day but for the Native Americans this could have become deadly. Long term effects were respiratory and death. Influenza killed many Europeans on the ships and the exposure that they spread to the Native Americans was destructive.
