Democratic Education is about the accessibility of education to everyone regardless of race or financial status. On paper, Champ 101 was an attempt to make Champlain more accessible to students, allowing for completely equal access to information that every student should have. In practice, it simply frustrated those who knew the info, and confused those who didn't.

Cafeteria comfort is not high here. While everyone would recognize their student leader, only about 1/4 of responders would be comfortable approaching and saying hello to them. This backfires immensely on what Champ 101 was trying to achieve with the student leaders - not many people feel comfortable enough with them to ask them questions about college, especially if they feel like they can't say hi to them in the cafeteria.

What do you wish this class hadn't covered, either earlier in the curriculum, or at all?

"the dumb icebreakers and lessons designed for homesick kids"

"So many icebreakers"

"Poor timing made things difficult to explain"

"I really don't feel like I needed to know about the W curve for first-year students, it made me feel stressed out because I felt like I was doing fine, and then was told that feeling like I was doing well then meant that I would struggle a lot in the future."

"Nothing really. Maybe conflict and stress relief were a little unnecessary but I didn't mind."

"There wasn't anything that I was against, but topics that were covered in orientation didn't seem useful to cover again, at least for me."

"I mean, the class as a whole is redundant, so pretty much everything"

"Again, unsure. I found a lot of it to be useful."

In MOST scenarios, how was information presented to your class (slideshows, lectures, peardecks... what was used) and was it effective?

"a mix of all of those things, but mostly doing these things"

"Slideshows and then class/group discussions that were effective most of the time. The group discussions were best though."

"Slideshows; it wasn’t that effective."

"It was presented in an engaging way, but there was too little content for the whole class."

"We played icebreakers"

"Slideshows and nearpods. Both where effective. Nearpods where more fun."

"Slideshows - it was pretty effective about communicating the information."

It would have been less redundant. In fact, my instructors cancelled Friday classes after like Week 4. They deemed it was unnecessary. Everything could be covered in one class period a week."
