Senegal is a multilingual country with 36 languages. Of those, Wolof is the most widely spoken.

French, which was inherited from the colonial era, is the official language of Senegal. It is used by the administration.  

Several of the Senegalese languages have the status of "national languages": Balanta-Ganja, Hassaniyya, Jola-Fonyi,Mandinka, Mandjak, Mankanya, Noon (Serer-Noon), Pulaar, Serer, Soninke, and Wolof.

There also languages that come from Mali which are called Mande languages and include Soninke, and Mandinka. Jola (Diola) is a main language in the Casamance region. The Guinea Creole dialect, based on Portuguese is also spoken in that region.

Green is the colour of Islam, yellow is the colour of gold, red is the colour of blood and the green star represents the Prophet.
