  • It was used to amputate limbs. 
  • You would tighten it around the limb to stop from bleeding out. 
  • Anyone who used them in the war had to twist a bandage onto the wound and twist it with a stick until the bleeding stopped. 
  • Before using the tourniquet, you would try to stop the blood with direct pressures
  •  it can also save peoples lives because its quick and easy to apply, if you're not near any place like a hospital and you're hurt and bleeding you can use the tourniquet and wait for an ambulance.

  • The tourniquet started off in the 1600s when soldiers tied a stick and a bandage around a persons leg.
  •  Then in the 1700s surgeons invented a tourniquet that involved using a screw to tighten it.
  • In 1800s it was used for more things than amputation, Joseph Lister was the first known person to invent it and he used the tourniquet to compress abdominal arteries. 
  • The current day tourniquet is used for the same purposes.
