"Just as I opened my mouth to call for Ruth, who always tagged along in my dreams, a thick mist blew over the beach."
Isabel has a true love for Ruth, and really cares about her deeply, considering that it was stated that she is in every single one of Isabel's dreams. Isabel misses Ruth severely, and desperately wants to see her again. I believe that the thick mist symbolizes that Isabel no longer able to see Ruth, as the mist is stopping Isabel from seeing Ruth in her dreams.

"The week after Hickey's hanging, Becky suffered a mild attack of ague that had befallen so many soldiers."
Memory Moment
The scene of Hickey's hanging is constantly replaying in Becky's head. Because it won't stop, she is left with seeing the vulgar scene in her mind repeatedly, most likely during any task. Seeing this so many times, is making her feel ill, and prone to vomiting. This is most likely out of nervousness that she will have to see this happen again, or the next time, she will be the one hung on the rope. Becky is mentally scarred.

" In need of some help?"
The fact that Isabel barely knows the blacksmith, and he shows empathy and understanding towards her, and even wants to help, shows that not everyone is against Isabel, and there are people are there willing to help her voluntary, and out of pure care. Though life may seem difficult for Isabel currently, there are people out there to help her.

"She is five years old." I rose another step. "She is a baby and you sold her away from me."
Isabel is furious about Ruth being sold. Ruth is her little sister, and irreplaceable as a human, a friend, and a part of the family. I have a five-year-old brother, and if he'd ever been taken from me, I don't know how I'd carry on. At this moment, Isabel truly realizes just how important her sister is to her, and that she MUST get her back.

Ruth lit up like a lantern when she saw them fancy clothes again. Promised to be quiet as ever."
It seems that Madam is brain-washing Ruth in order to make Ruth her "pet." Someone she can dress up, show off, and do whatever she wants with. It doesn't help in Ruth's case that she suffers from mental illness, and I believe that Madam Lockton is cruelly taking advantage of her condition.

Have you seen her?” This is very important because it is showing how Isabel knows that Ruth was sold and is very mad. She is hoping that Ruth is not actually gone but there is not much hope. Ruth played a huge role on Isabel because Isabel has no one to be friends with and Ruth was one of her only and best friends.

Memory Moment- Isabel misses her parents so much that she imagines them comforting her when she needs them. Isabel has no one at this point in the story. Her sister was sold, her parents died, and no one was willing to associate themselves with a lowly slave. Even Jenny, Isabel's mother's friend, was too far away for Isabel to reach her. It's sad that Isabel want someone, anyone, to comfort her, but no one is there to help her.

"'The law binds my hands and actions. You must return to your mistress.'" - Contrasts and Contradictions - Isabel was crushed when she heard Colonel Reagan speak. He was her only chance of being free without Isabel having to run away. Colonel Reagan had originally told Isabel that he would do his best to help her. After all, she offered him very useful information. I expected the colonel to follow through with his promise, but he didn't. Despite the fact that the colonel was fighting for the Rebel's freedom, he wasn't too concerned with the freedom of the slaves. It would be no harm to him if he helped Isabel or not.

It hurt her greatly, because she believed that Ruth had no one to protect her. This quote shows how Becky cared about Ruth as well. Despite the fact that we usually see Becky as someone tough, and without many emotions, she still was upset when Ruth was sold. I can tell that Becky was said because the quote stated that "[her] eyes filled again.". I can infer that Becky had been crying, as she was also worried for Ruth.

"A half-dozen men took to chopping the King and his steed to bits." The men started to destroy the statue of the king because they were rebels. I think this quote showed how much they despised the king and his taxes. The Patriots were destroying the statue as an act of rebellion. I wondered how Mr. Lockton would react if he saw this, even though he left New York. He would have had to try his best to act like a Patriot, even though he was really a Loyalist.
