Multinationals go head to head following "ridiculous accusation"

Røtta’s largest employers; aquaculture company FishNor and silicone-producer ChemNor go head-to-head after FishNor’s manager blamed ChemNor for their “substantial decline in profits” over the course of the past year and a half. He believes that the chemical manufacturing business pollutes Lake Røtta by discharging “toxic chemicals” that are harming FishNor’s “sustainable seafood production”.

ChemNor chief executive Martin Andreassen calls the allegation “unfounded, absurd and potentially harmful to ChemNor’s reputation”. Andreassen goes on to say that “ChemNor has a great track-record when it comes to conscientiously monitoring the chemicals that enter and exit our facilities.”

Both companies have hired a team of investigators to investigate the matter.

Please find the requested data attached. Our production processes generate water with high levels of anions and organic pollutants (ammonia-nitrogen, phosphate, fluoride), acid and bases, and heavy precious metals. We treat and reuse wastewater for cooling towers to reduce water consumption and costs. We treat our wastewater by precipitation and flocculation. This contains the fluoride through precipitation as calcium fluoride by the addition of lime milk or calcium chloride. The same technique is used to get rid of copper ions. This process step produces sludge, which is dewatered and disposed of. Water from partial flow treatments still exceeds the pH range permissible for discharge, so this undergoes a multi-stage neutralisation process to meet the legal requirements for discharge into the lake. Lake Røtta dam repairs finished! The multi-million repair works for the Lake Røtta Dam spillway are now complete. The works – originally estimated to cost NOK50 million – should help to minimise the impact future extreme weather may have on the dam structure and surrounding communities.

Works included:

- Construction of a secondary Erosion Control Structure (ECS) 30 metres upstream of the existing ECS
- Passive anchors within the unlined spillway chute
- Concrete lining of the spillway walls between the crest and ECS

As one of Europe’s most historically rich countries, Norway has loads of creepy lakes we can look into. My favourite is easily Lake Røtta. During the Nazi occupation of Norway, this lake was used to house a heavy water production facility for the Germans. The lake was also used to transport the heavy water to another location, due to it being quite large. Heavy water was vital to the Nazi’s advanced weapons programs – so this lake was extremely important to them. In 1944, a Nazi transportation ship was moving heavy water across the lake. When it reached the deepest section of the lake, the Norwegian resistance attacked and sank it. It’s wreck was only rediscovered in the 1990s.

Absolutely terrible waste on shorelines of Lake Røtta. This has to stop! When will you make fish farms clean up the mess that they are creating @RøttaKommune?

FishNor has over the last years had a decrease in fish size, which they have never seen before at their previous production sites. The fish show tendencies for hormone disruption, and rise the question if ChemNor is to blame...

During an interview with ChemNor, their communications team suggest activities within FishNor is to blame. As they said, "We are a harmless company that pose no threat to nature".

I was just forwarded this. The so-called "ECO feed" they use there. The "The diet of our Arctic char mimics that of local wild Arctic char closely" on their website is total bollocks.

Fishnor told us that they use copper nets. But are telling us that it doesn´t have any effects on the fish. They use vaccines for their fish, and not antibiotics.

They are complaining about Hexachlorobutadien from Chemnor (HFC 300kg per year). Told us that silicon production are linked to early onset puberty.

ChemNor has done an analysis on their wastewater and claim that they have nothing to hide, but will give no intel on their results. The company says they try their best and do what they can with plastic pellett pollution. Is this good enough?

Fishnor have new sediment samples!

Measurements coming back from the sediments identifies HBCD and BDE47 in the sediments. Fishnor links this to Chemnor´s production of POPs. But this is still unknown.

ChemNor comments on the intel from FishNor; "Copper is endocrine disrupting aquatic organisms. They use copper nets, so we can therefore see that their problems come from themselves". This information comes from their R&D department, supported by published articles.

They also comment on the accusations concerning hexachlorbutadien that they release 300kg/year; "We are currently removing 80kg/year. We want the source. The accusations are wrong".

The communcations teams question the sediment samples done by FishNor. "The accusations of our company producing POPs is nonsense" - Stian from the communications team. They want information on where the sediment samples were sampled from to get those results.

We have never accused ChemNor for producing POPs, and we assume that they as professional chemists are well aware that POPs are highly toxic and out of industry decades ago. We are concerned though, that they dont know their own numbers on halogenated hydrocarbons....

FishNor comments on the ChemNor accusation: The copper nets are proven enviromental friendly and proven to not leach. They use this on all their facilities with no problems.

On another note, the food that they use are the best ECO feed, with no problems in anyother of their fish farms. Though no proof was given on what chemicals was used in the treatment of the food.
