Summary: Jeannette was hungry and went to the stove to boil some hot dogs. Her mother, Rose Mary, was in the other room while Jeannette was unsupervised. While she was cooking, her dress caught on fire. Jeannette was screaming and rolling around on the floor when Rose Mary ran into the kitchen to see what had happened. Her parents took her to the hospital and the nurse thought the parents were irresponsible.

Characters: This scene shows that the parents are not taking proper care of their children and are not fit to be parents.

Theme: Neglect vs Independence. There is a difference between letting your child have responsibilities and forcing them to grow up and do things they shouldn't have to.

Quote: "Mommy, help me!" I shrieked (9).

Falling Out of the Car (29-32)

Summary: They are driving very quickly through the desert and they drive over railroad tracks which causes Jeannette to fall out. She wanted to wander off but she decided to stay by the tracks because she trusted her dad to come back for her. He does.

Characters: Jeannette: She has enough faith in her dad to come back for her which shows she has a strong connection with him.
Dad: Even though he was careless while driving he would always be Jeannette's hero for coming back for her.
Mom: She didn't even notice that Jeannette fell out of the car.

Theme: Neglect and Connections are the two main themes during this scene. The neglect stems from the mom not even noticing that one of her children fell out of the car. Connection is displayed through the relationship between Jeannette and her father. Even though her father is careless Jeannette still has that trust and admiration for him which will lead to her making excuses for him.

Quote: "They might not notice I was missing. They might decide that it wasn't worth the drive back to retrieve me; that like Quixote the cat, I was a bother and a burden they could do without" (30).

Summary- Dad starts making fun of Mom after she exaggerates how long her carries her babies, and dad calls them freaks of nature. Mom claims all her babies are postmature and that's why they're so smart. Then Mom gets out of the car and starts running, so Dad chases her and they are both yelling and cussing at each other, until he cornered her against the rocks and dragged her back inside the car.

Characters- It shows the dad lets his addiction get the best of him.

Theme- In abusive households chaos is normalized, but shouldn't be.

Quote- "Lori, Brian, and I braced one another with our arms, like we always did when Dad went on some wild chase that we knew would get bumpy" (43).

Swimming Scene

Summary: Rex took the family to the hot springs to swim. Brian and Lori knew how to swim, but Jeannette did not. Large bodies of water scared her. Rex told Jeannette he was going to teach her how to swim. He does this by letting her flail and sink, rescuing her, and then throwing her back to struggle and go under again. After repeating this, Jeannette tries to get away from Rex "saving her" and propels herself out of his grasp, swimming.

Characters: This shows how Rex and Rose Mary's parenting styles are very untraditional and quite rough. The theme of self-sufficiency is prevalent in this scene. Rex doesn't teach Jeannette how to swim, Jeannette teaches herself. Rex said he would've never let her drown, but she has to learn to survive on her own.

Theme: Unconventional parenting, self-sufficiency, parental love or lack of

Quote: Rex says, "One lesson every parent needs to teach a child is 'If you don't want to sink, you better figure out how to swim" (66).

U-Haul

Summary- The parents put the children in the back of the U-Haul. While driving the back door of the U-Haul flew open. The children were scared that they would be sucked out of the door. They tried to signal to their parents by slamming on the back, but the engine was too loud, and they could not be heard. Brian tried to close the door to the U-Haul but almost got sucked out the door. A car came and honked its horn, causing the parents to stop. The father came around and was both mad and scared.
Characters- The scene showed the parents are willing to do anything to flee from responsibility. It also shows that the children are just along for the ride and cannot stop their parents.
Theme- poverty, due to the fact that the parents are running away from bills. Family dynamics is another theme, it shows how the parents are willing to risk their children's safety.
Quote- "We tried to explain that it wasn't our fault the doors blew open, but he was still angry" (50).

She is detached from the baby, skips out on the hospital, and gives the baby to Jeannette- another of her children.

Character: Her mother gives the newborn to Jeannette because she does not care about her baby. The baby is named for both grandmothers with a middle name Maureen (named after the mom Mary). The mom is so selfish she uses Maureen- the name connected to her. new addition to the family after herself.

Theme: Parental detachment, maturing at a young age

Quote: "Mom handed me the baby.

Summary: Jeannette's parents always told her and her siblings that Santa wasn't real and that kids who thought otherwise were just being tricked. However, they did celebrate Christmas. One year, however, Rex got fired from his job and couldn't give them real presents, so he gave them stars. Jeannette chose a planet, but he said it was okay after a bit of convincing.

Characters: It shows that despite all the things that we see her parents do that might make us think otherwise, they love their children and will try to do what they can for them on occasion. It also shows Jeannette's innocence as she doesn't see it as foolish and takes what he's saying seriously. It's a reminder that the character that has been through all of this is still a very young child, which is easy to forget as you get lost in her advanced writing and the fact that she speaks in the first person.

Theme: Even a fool still feels love for their children.

Quote: "Years from now, when all the junk they got is broken and long forgotten,' Dad said, 'You'll still have your stars" (41).
