I truly believe that Mr.Robot is one of the most under looked and under appreciated television programs of this decade, especially considering the fact that this program is an accurate and unique depiction of social life in the 2010s. I am currently following several of the actors and fan pages on this show on social media, have watched each and every episode and got my dad hooked towards this program as well. The way I discovered this program was from one of my most favorite reviewer named RalphTheMovieMaker making a 30 minute long video analyzing and breaking down this show as a whole, who is also an extremely passionate fan of this program as well. Although I watched his interpretations and opinions of the show before even watching the pilot episode, I wanted to experience this program with my own eyes and create my own perspectives of Mr.Robot as a whole.

RalphTheMovieMaker Review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JohyOqnqkus

Mr.Robot on the surface is a show that followers around an unreliable protagonist named Elliot Alderson, who’s main purpose in life in his eyes is to hack major corporations and create a rebellion. However, there is so much more this show has to offer than just being your basic hacker/sci-fi program. As the average viewer dives deeper into the overall meaning of the show you begin to see the incredible physical symbolic depictions of addiction, depression and isolation that this show is able to provide against our society as a whole. In addition to internal struggles, this show is able to call out big businesses and the negativity that the media overload has had against our society. The audience truly doesn’t know what is going to happen next throughout the course of the series, which adds onto the experience and makes us feel like we are apart of this futuristic society presented to us. All of these factors add up to the fact that Mr.Robot is one of the most well-produced, symbolic and yet somehow unrecognized programs that Modern Television has ever seen.

"Where is my Mind" Scene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPY-Ou8MR44&t=1s

The purpose of my analysis is to explore the overall themes “Mr.Robot” is able to provide throughout the course of the series, and how this program is able to create a one of a kind experience towards the audience. Over the course of only 4 seasons, Mr.Robot has been able to cover a large amount of ground in this realistic yet fictional world of characters. This show’s stylistic appeal, musical tension, characteristic development and internal dialogues/struggles help create the tone of the series and is not afraid to challenge the basic norms of our society's values and the culture technology has created in our mass media age. The viewer is strapped along the passenger seat from the very start of the show and will be subject to a journey unlike any other on modern television. Although Mr.Robot is full of fictional characters and businesses, there is still a large sense of eeriness into how realistic these elements of the program are able to appear although the viewer understands it is fictional. This show takes place over a few months in 2015, so throwing in those current events (for example, Obama being president and the news showing footage of Donald Trump running for president) over the course of the series were crucial in making the story appear more realistic as a whole. If the show were to throw in a major event this year in the final season, then that wouldn’t add on to the narrative taking place in 2015. However, the fact that this show does not do this only adds on to the fact that there is a numerous amount of work and detail that goes into each script of every episode, pleasing the audience and holding true to the story in the process.

"Mr.Robot Season 4: TV is the New Cinema"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlbszXqBv2c

Yes, I believe Elliot Alderson represents that awkward/shy part inside of all of us and I can relate with a lot of the issues that he faces with other individuals and being social in general. He is an extremely realistic character that goes through family issues, drug issues and social issues throughout the course of the series that can easily appeal towards anybody going through a struggling period of their life. Having Elliot be a relatable and realistic protagonist really makes the show for me, because I honestly do not believe this show would nearly be as effective without Rami Malek as Elliot Alderson.

Rami Malek Season 1 Interview:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxzzW_e6bWs

Story and Genre - Identify the stages of the hermeneutic code. (Enigma, Delay, Resolution). Can you identify them in the narrative?

Enigma - Elliot Alderson’s character has two parts to him, which are himself and his alter-ego named “Mr. Robot” who is in short his dead father’s conscious. Elliot himself is an extremely uncomfortable and anti-social character that is unable to make decisions on his own and can’t appeal with anybody. However, his alter ego (his father Mr. Robot) is an uncontrollable revolutionist that will not stop at anything to create a social revolution against the government and big businesses. Elliot is also one of the most wanted cybercriminals in the entire world, being a target of both the government and a hacker group referred to as “The Dark Army”. This leads the question at the beginning of most episode, which is “how will Elliot escape this problem this time”, because it truly feels like there is something wrong going on with him every single episode.

Delay - The characters in the show never know which part of Elliot is actually in control, while the audience isn’t even able to trust our protagonist since he is extremely unreliable. Nobody truly knows if Elliot is going to make it in one piece by the end of the episode or if he is going to be able to seize control of his demons. This has led Elliot to lose several people close to him, caused a large amount of depression and addiction towards his everyday life and has ruined his physical and mental health in the process.

Resolution - Elliot slowly but surely continues to grow closer towards his goal of wanting to “Change the World” in his own unique fashion. Although he has an incredible amount of setbacks throughout the series, he always somehow finds his way back to normal on his journey and doesn’t appear like he will be stopping anytime soon until his desire of a credit card-less society is completed.

Sam Esmail Recaps Show/Episodes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8vnetU6KSs

Every single episode Mr. Robot is able to provide a recap of what happened in previous episodes of the series and has a different title card every single episode. Most episodes tend to begin in sequence after a really significant moment or scene of the series, so having a “previously on...” montage is able to provide context and lets the audience remember significant events of the series. Sometimes, even in the final season, there are callbacks to events of the first season to help set the tone of how a character may react to the events of the current episode. There is no opening theme song to the show, but rather these title cards help set the scene of the episode and foreshadows certain events and plot developments that will occur in the episode. Having this method of opening up each individual episode with it’s own title card and scenario adds onto the excitement and anticipation the audience has once beginning every episode.

Demographics - Are the characters and the actors who portray them young adults, children, middle aged, or seniors? Are the characters supposed to be single? Members or families? Lower, middle or upper class?

The majority of the characters in this show are lower or middle class citizens who have a mild distaste against the upper class that runs their way of life. Relationships are hard to come by with Elliot and Darlene, who can’t even communicate with each other as brother and sister and find themselves stuck in numerous issues along with the main problems of the show. Ordinary citizens are able to fight back with unordinary virtual/physical attacks and lead the key factors of how things are eventually ran in this world. Elliot Alderson has a very significant relationship with his neighbor Shayla in season 1, who he truly felt like he could open up to about his own personal problems in a passionate way. After Elliot indirectly kills her in a tragic incident, he is unable to open up emotionally with any significant other which really plays a key part in his loneliness and depression throughout the course of the series. In this final season, it seems like he makes a true connection with a woman named Olivia, who has a similar past as Elliot, with an addiction to drugs and parents who passed away too soon. However, in the end it turns out that Elliot only used her as a method of getting closer to his own personal ambitions, even going as far as to overdose her so she will be unable to fulfil the job for the Dark Army and lose custody of her children. Olivia’s last words to elliot were her calling him a “monster” and then she ended up committing suicide inside of her own bathroom. Seeing Elliot holding Olivia's corpse was the most powerful moment of the series for me, almost showing how much Elliot has digressed as a human throughout the series and into a sociopath that will stop at nothing to achieve his goal of destroying the Dark Army. The amount of social sympathy the audience had for Elliot throughout the series is almost diminished, as we understand that there is truly nobody in this world that can save Elliot from himself.

Season Two had .74 million (740,000) viewers per episode, Season Three had .53 million (530,000) viewers per episode and Season Four is only on pace for .30 (300,000) viewers per episode.

SNL Skit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pz-mCjHA6Ak

Rami Malek, who portrays the main protagonist Elliot Alderson in the show, has only gained more attraction since the beginning of the program. He has become the first actor of Egpyitan heritage to win an Academy Award, has received an Oscar for his role of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, has been nominated for seven industry awards in film/television, and has even won an Emmy for his role as Elliot in Mr. Robot. Experienced actors such as Christain Slater, Carly Chaikin, Portia Doubleday and Michael Crisopher help provide their own takes on their significant main characters in their own unique fashions, while newer actors such as Grace Gummer, Stephanie Corneliussen and Martin Wallström look just as experienced and well casted in achieving the main goals of their characters at hand. Modern day Rapper Joey Bada$$ plays a key part in the later seasons of the series as a character named Leon, adding a sense of diversity and variety to the cast. BD Wong plays the most interesting character design in the show by far, who portrays the character Whiterose as both a male and a female transgender, while also being able to speak both English and Chinese.

Cast Recaps the Series:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrKQorqrx7w

Mr.Robot’s creator Sam Esmail, who is the creator, director, producer, writer and even an actor of the program, envisioned this show to be around 5 seasons or so. However, sadly this show has gotten cancelled and Season four will be the quick finale of the program, meaning the tension of the show will only continue to increase over the course of this final season. There is so much effort that goes into every episode of Mr.Robot, making sure each episode is its own unique experience towards the audience. There have been episodes with no dialogue, no cuts/transitions and only texting/hacking in computers to help create a sense of eeriness from our usual expectations of the show. Everybody in the cast understands what they want to convey throughout the show, so it helps form and develop each episode in a much more enjoyable fashion for the viewers.

"How Mr.Robot Pulled off the One Take", 24 Frames of Nick
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTxEdgaxsgM

The audience is introduced to a figure named Elliot Alderson, with no sense of background or who he is as a person. He informs us directly that he has a very strong distaste of large corporations on business, specifically Ecorp in the beginning of the series, and makes it his lifelong goal to “change the world” and create a social revolution. It doesn't take for the audience and other characters to figure out that Elliot is an extremely intelligent hacker who has the ability to start and prevent anything he desires just with his abilities on computer hacking and malware alone. However, he is far from perfect, as he is in a constant mental battle against his dead father's memory in his head, who refers himself as Mr.Robot because that was the name of his old startup company name. Elliot has on and off relationships with his lifelong friend Angela, sister Darlene and girlfriend Shayla, all of which he finds hard to open up to. Elliot loses Shayla after helping break her drug dealer, Vera, out of prison, who escapes and leaves Elliot with her dead corpse. This hurts Elliot extremely, who turns himself directly to his group he discovered at an Amusement Park's Arcade. Without even knowing it, Elliot's alter ego Mr. Robot, creates a group referred to a Fsociety with Darlene, and eventually teams up with former laid off Ecorp Employee, named Tyrell Wellick, to combat the upper class currency and businesses. Tyrell Wellick is a murderer of the current Ecorps CEO's wife, which he did as a response of not getting the CEO position himself, yet finds a large amount of respect and admiration towards Elliot. However, in the final episode of the season Tyrell has vanished from Elliot as tensions arise, leaving Elliot alone with himself once again.

This program takes place in a “New York City” type of city throughout the course of the show. We see most ordinary people in this show are Hackers that form a group called “Fsociety” and go against a big bank corporation named “E-Corp”. Ordinary individuals are able to control the technological society of this show in their own fashions, leading to complete chaos and an unbalance for the culture of the society in this show. The audience is able to see the upper class of the city, while also getting the perspective of the lower and middle class as well. The interesting thing about doing this is that we witness the fact that both sides face similar issues and are affected by all of this negativity in a similar fashion.

Fsociety Speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPYCtErvMyA

This series has an extremely dark tone to it established from the very first episode all the way to the last season. Elliot always wears the same black hoodie and black jeans that blends into the grey and lifeless city look portrayed as the usual setting of the show. Having this tone almost provides how life is from Elliot’s eyes, who is an emotionless human being that finds most of his enjoyment (hence the bright colors and tone) when operating on his computer. The computer scenes of the series are without a doubt the most unique, complicated and satisfying moments of the series, often shown with close shots with sci-music and high intensity stakes with every move they make, somehow making something as complicated as Hacking entertaining and understandable.

Decryption Montage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9CBKGLVCME&t=38s

Having Elliot being able to communicate to the audience (with the viewers being his “Imaginary Friends”) is a clever way to help express his concerns without force feeding it down our throats or making it corny/cliche.
Below are 2 scenes from my favorite episode (S2E3) of the series because of how well it depicts the impact of drugs it has on individuals. Elliot is given a false sense of hope from Adderall, just as many others are when abusing drugs. The withdrawal systems hit Elliot especially hard as the episode progresses, almost as a way of warning the audience of the repercussions drugs possess while also presenting it in a well-written and creative fashion.

https://youtu.be/mKaZPPVb2iE

Tyrell Wellick is still nowhere to be found as a manhunt of both Ecorp executives, Law Enforcement and Elliot are looking everywhere for him. Elliot is also not in the best condition throughout most of this season, finding himself in an isolated place with an inability to open up to anybody. It almost appears he is doing the same thing every episode, going to the diner with Leon, watching pickup basketball with Leon, doing drugs and avoiding those who are trying to reach out to him as a whole. However, in an extremely well written and executed plot twist, it is revealed 9 episodes into the season that Elliot has been in prison the entire season for hacking Ecorp and working with Tyrell. He gets bailed out by Darlene, only to be found immediately by Tyrell in an effort to regain momentum on their plan to execute "stage 2" of the plan, which would be to disable all credit card companies in Ecorp. Elliot freaks out on Tyrell, who shoots Elliot in order to prevent Elliot from destroying his own plan. The camera fades to black, and we wonder if Elliot will be able to survive the wounds.

Prison Reveal Scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD_HG3f-_9M

Tyrell is finally reintroduced back into the show, as it is revealed he was kept in an isolated farm house by the Dark Army in hopes to prevent him and Elliot from working together. In addition, the Dark Army has sparked chaos as Elliot slowly recovers from his fatal injuries. In attempt to diffuse a bomb threat placed in an Ecorp building, Elliot goes to great lengths in trying to hack this bomb from ever happening. However, as he walks outside to a news station, he realizes the Dark Army as destroyed every single Ecorp building throughout the globe. Fsociety is also crumbling apart, with most members of the group dismantling from the database all together or have fallen victim to the Dark Army's attacks. Respected FBI Agent Dominique Dipierro is beginning to figure out the truth about Darlene and Elliot, who also provides a realistic character design that faces loneliness whenever living at home. Darlene and Dom have a very weird relationship with each other, both of which are attracted to each other but overall use each other against each other at the same time. Philip Price is still struggling in his agreements with White Rose and eventually leaves Ecorp as a whole, leaving the company to Tyrell, who makes national headlines again as he reveals he was kidnapped by the Dark Army to the national media. Elliot realizes now that the only way he is going to be able to stop the Dark Army is by working with Mr.Robot rather than trying to avoid him, so he comes to an agreement with Darlene for all of them and Tyrell to fight back together. Darlene is greeted by Vera at the very last scene in the season, who has intentions in working with Elliot.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElFF6n-URzQ

Angela is killed minutes into the premiere, showing that this show is still not afraid to take anybody off at anytime they please. Elliot is drugged by the dark army inside of his own house, but is instantly revived, showing that this was more of a warning than action itself. Comedy is shown more frequently in this season, with punchlines and side characters taking up the screen a lot more frequently throughout these few episodes. One episode is shown in this season without any dialogue besides at the very end and beginning of the episode, adding onto the tension of the events taking place and adding an indie appeal to the programs abstract style. Vera is continuing to try and see Elliot, as Tyrell decides to run away from Elliot as he is shot in the middle of the forest. As we are almost done with this series as a whole, I only expect tensions to arise more and more as the series begins to tie more and more loose ends throughout each episode. I only hope Elliot somehow is able to stop the Dark Army, as that would satisfy the audience and provide a motivational ending to an otherwise dark, dramatic and depressing tone throughout the series.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtMgevWjkTA

It is truly impressive how this program is able to maintain the same appeal and direction in the series as this show continues to get deeper in the series. Beginning in 2015, the cast has stayed pretty identical now that we are in 2019. Behind the scenes shows the actors/producers having a great time, showing their personalities in their own unique way. The amount of passion and effort that has went into all elements into this program is what has made Mr.Robot stand out to me. The shows style, character development and themes are all shown in extremely unique and natural fashions through intelligent writing and story telling. If Elliot were to just tell us how he is feeling all of the time, then that wouldn't be nearly as interesting as the format of him communicating to Mr.Robot as a method of him combatting in his inner flaws and failures. It is depressing to see a show of this magnitude end so soon, especially during the most intense and dramatic moments of the series. However, I'd rather this show end in a respectable fashion rather than "jumping the shark" and only making the show for money. It is clear that everybody that works for Mr.Robot truly cares about the program, which is what makes this show as memorable and unique as it is.

"Mr.Robot According to Leon"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJDmJeydt-w&t=4s
