When I turned eighteen, I was fixated on moving out as soon as possible. High school was a difficult time for me; I was struggling severely with my mental health and almost dropped out my first year. Due to primarily Covid-19 related issues, I ended up dropping out in my senior year and decided to go to community college last summer. My friends and I put college on a sort of pedestal, so when they all left, and I stayed, I quickly felt like I was missing out on virtually everything. I felt behind in life and eventually came to the conclusion that I needed to move out right away.

For the first time in my life, I had complete tunnel vision when it came to achieving my goal of moving out. I went from working as a viola teacher part-time to as much as I could handle and then some. I got lucky, and a friend of mine, along with another teacher, helped me find more than enough students to work with. I continued with school, but working consumed my entire life. I felt extremely overwhelmed, but I didn't care. The immediate change of pace in my life altered my perspective of how I viewed obstacles, from a wall blocking my way to more of a steep incline, just a more challenging part of the path.

The kids I was working with began wanting to compete and get certifications. When I was younger, I participated in the same things and heavily relied on my teacher for mental support, which these kids were also looking to me for. I had never had so many people rely on me before. If I had the time to stop and think about it, I would have been terrified. I was not one to jump into things until I felt prepared. All the preconceived notions about my own capabilities and insecurities I had about my ability to achieve my objectives were starting to crumble.

Music was the only thing I felt I was ever truly successful at, but at the same time, I felt like the past eight years I spent practicing almost every day amounted to nothing. I love music, but being classically trained feels like a separate category. I didn't hate learning to play instruments or competing in competitions; However, I didn't love it either. I have never had distinct hobbies; I've always been curious about lots of things and tend to move on from one thing to the next when something new interests me. So at the end of the day, it felt like all I had was music, but at the same time, it didn't matter to me in the way that I felt it was supposed to. I know everyone has something to offer, but I didn't feel like I did. While working with all these kids I tried to offer all I could, and when I fell short I went out and learned more. Overall they made me feel like my background in music had amounted to something I was proud of.

When I realized I had met my financial goal, I no longer cared to move out. I decided I wanted to stay at home with my parents until I transfer, especially since the last thing they want is for me to move out. These three reasons don't pertain to my goal of moving out, but the underlying reason that drove me to convince myself that it would make me feel better about my life. I felt like everyone around me was growing up, and I wasn't; the feeling of inadequacy I felt made me seek what would have been a false sense of growth. I thought that I needed to prove something to all the people in my life and anyone who knew me. I ended up happy with the person I'm slowly growing up to be. I didn't realize how much pressure I put on what people thought of me until I truly felt I had nothing to prove to others. I want to build a good life for myself because I deserve it and not because I have something to prove.
