My perspective as an educator..

As an educator the SAMR model brings so much value and usefulness into the classroom. Students of the 21st century are familiarized with technology at very young ages and it's come to a point that they are better in technology than us teachers. Students are always reaching for new technology and quite frankly will be the ones to create even greater technology in the future. I believe they should be motivated and immersed in technology in schools, because technology is already a big part of their lives. We need to teach them how to use everyday technology in relation to their everyday school subjects. We can do this fairly easily with the use of the SAMR model. I can transform any lesson to a far more exciting lesson by simply substituting with technology in a lesson. Or with some more thought and interest in a topic, I can redifine the whole lesson to something far more greater and intriguing. As a child, I was far more interested in doing a research project on the computer with a wide data base, rather than being limited to the newspapers, articles, and books my teacher provided. I catch myself being bored in classes with no technology or media involved, and I've also witnessed this in classes I observed. Technology friendly classes reap a higher reward for the teacher and students, especially in the 21st century.

The lesson plan is geared towards grades 1-2. The topic is about weather and meteorology, therefore it is a great science lesson. It will teach students what goes into predicting the weather. They will learn how weather affects people. The learning objectives are recognizing different weather and learning how to speak about the weather forecast. First, they will read What's the Weather Today? By Alan Fowler. Secondly, they will watch Weather Watch to learn about weather, weather forecasting, and learn why people want to know the weather. Thirdly, discuss weather and television. Then, practice writing sentences that would be said in a weather forecast. Lastly, set up a weather forecasting studio so that the students can role-play. You can then play it on a classroom TV or projector.

We will set up a faux studio and role-play as weather reporters. In this video we will take turns describing the weather, provide the temperature, and warn about weather hazards such as icy roads, windy, pouring rain, etc. This will be far more interesting than filling out a weather chart. The students will meet their objectives by being being able to recognize the weather outside, talk about weather, and more valuable skills.
