Inside of his will he has stipulated that if something should happen to his son, his only heir, then the bulk of his estate, which includes $200K, will go to his sister's first born child, which just so happens to be Doctor Thorne's niece Mary. Doctor Thorne spends the bulk of the remaining chapters going back and forth debating on whether he should tell Roger about this development.

The way Trollope continues to add dimension to the story through multiple plot lines always impresses me, but this one in particular I was surprised by. I knew that Mary would need to inherit in some way so that she could be with her obvious future man, Frank Gresham the younger, but I truly did not know how it was going to happen. I am curious to know if Roger Scatcherd, her unknown uncle, will come to be known to her or if he will die before she or Doctor Thorne can make him aware of the situation.

In this chapter, we are introduced to the two main characters: Tate, and Miles, as well as two side characters: Cap and Dillon. We learn that the present location of this story takes place in San Francisco, and that Tate is temporarily moving in with her brother Corbin in his apartment. Miles and Tate have a very interesting way of meeting each other for the first time, which definitely sets a bad first impression on Miles.

From the moment that Dillon was introduced, I got a bad feeling about him. He will definitely be a character that frustrates me throughout the story, as I feel that he is going to be a static character. I absolutely love the ironic surprise that Corbin's neighbor who was supposed to help Tate with the drunk guy, ended up being the drunk guy. You start to notice the spark starting to form as she was comforting Miles on the couch, and I feel that this is a good way to introduce such feelings, especially since she continues to deny it to herself.

The fact that Tate decided to comfort Miles while he was laying there on the couch, rather than just leave him there and going to sleep, tells me that this is only the start to her feelings for him, considering she had just met him.

This chapter is told from the perspective of Mile's. We are taken 6 years in the past in every Miles Chapter, this is during his senior year. This is when we learn who Rachael is. We first hear about her in chapter 1, but we had no information on her until now. Mile's is speaking to an administrator and is instructed to show a new student around school, this new student is Rachael. Miles instantly falls in love with this girl. He can't get her name out of his head, and already begins to fantasize about the potential relationship that he truly believes will happen. Towards the end, he racks up the courage to ask her to hang out, and she accepts, which builds onto his fantasy of the two of them forming a relationship.

I was a bit shocked to discover that the girl Miles was crying about in chapter one, happens to be a girl he met in highschool. Considering he is an adult now, I'd never have expected him to be drunk-crying about a girl he met that many years ago.

At the start of this chapter, Tate awakens to find that not only is Miles still there, but he is no longer drunk. Now, he is staring at her from the doorway of her bedroom. After he questions things, she begins to think that he has no remembrance of the previous night. The only things he is concerned about are the whereabouts of his phone, and what happened to his hand. The tension-filled "conversation" goes on until Tate's brother Corbin arrives home. This is when Miles lays off a bit, and Tate expresses how she does not like how comfortable Miles is in Corbin's apartment. After a moment of reuniting, and small talk, Miles goes home, and after an hour, the three of them go downstairs to help Tate retrieve her bags, ending the chapter.

I definitely felt Tate's tone when she inferred that Miles must bring home so many girls while drunk and can't even remember who he's messed around with. It gave me an off feeling about him, and it gave Tate an off feeling as well.

In the chapter, Miles is called home by his dad to discuss something important. Mile's dad breaks the news that he is now seeing someone, this is where we learn that Miles recently lost his mom. Miles is infuriated with his father, but agrees to welcome her as she arrives to their house. When Miles opens the door and greets his dad's girlfriend, he notices that she is accompanied by her daughter. He instantly recognizes the familiar face that belongs to none other than Rachael. The chapter ends on a very depressing note as they both mentally realize that they cannot date each other.

I was not only shocked when Mile's dad unknowingly revealed that he'd been seeing this women before his mom had even passed, but I was especially shocked when it was revealed that Rachael is his dad's girlfriend's daughter. I felt a rush of sadness at the end of the chapter because I can't imagine the feeling of that sad realization.

Tate arrives to her apartment and notices that there are three men in the living room, two of them being Miles and Dillon. Tate, frustrated, questions them, only to find out that it's a thing they do on game nights. After an awkward conversation between Tate and Dillon in the kitchen, Miles approaches and signals for Dillon to return to the living room, considering he knows Dillon's intentions with Tate. Miles then gives Tate the keys to his apartment and tells her to go study there until the game is over. Hours later, Miles returns to his apartment and he and Tate talk about why his apartment is so bland, as well as the fact that he is a pilot like her brother. As Miles is changing into his pilot uniform, Tate can't take her eyes off of his abs, and her thoughts are out of control. She then questions if it is safe for him to fly a plane with alcohol in his system, to which he replies by telling her that he didn't drink and isn't much of a drinker. This causes her to bring up him being drunk the night they met, and she brings up Rachael's name, which clearly affected him in some way, leaving only awkwardness after he left in the elevator.

I was surprised that Tate mentioned Rachael, out of all things she could have said. It definitely changed Mile's mood, to which I think means Mile's is most likely confused as to how she knows.

Rachael and her mom stay for dinner at Mile's house. The tense and awkward silence at the table causes Mile's dad to take Rachael's mom out to the porch for a while, leaving Miles and Rachael inside alone. The two of them stand silent in the kitchen for some time, until Rachael mumbles saying that they're the worst parents in the world. The two of them exchange a few more words before Miles asks how long their parents had been seeing each other, Rachael answers him saying they'd been together for about a year. This breaks Miles heart, knowing his dad had been cheating on his mom before she died. This makes Miles no longer care about the circumstances, and he approaches Rachael and kisses her. A few minutes in, their parents come back inside and Rachael leaves with her mom soon after. That night, the two of them plan how they will lie in order to still go out on that date the next night.

I'm so invested in Mile's parts of the story, and this made me even more intrigued. I relate to the part about his dad cheating, so it definitely tugged at my heart strings. When they kissed, I felt a sense of relief because I know I would have done the same thing in that situation, especially with the urge of getting revenge.

Corbin and Tate are going home for Thanksgiving, and Corbin decides to bring Miles along with them. Tate isn't too sure how she feels about this, considering the awkward tension that had never been cleared last time they spoke. The elevator ride consisted of Tate and Miles holding a stern stare at each other, to which Tate was confused about. When the got in the car, Miles decided to drive, with Corbin sleeping in the passenger seat, and Tate reading a book in the back seat. Tate noticed that each time she looked into rear view mirror, Miles looked as well. She decided to smile on the final time she looked, and he smiled back. This shocked her. Eventually, Tate got tired, and set her feet on the center console, and when Miles went to rest his arm on it, she apologized and began to move her feet. Miles held her foot with his hand and told her it's alright and that she could keep her feet there. Tate swears he rubbed his thumb against her foot before moving his hand. This leads her to start thinking he may be falling for her too.

I covered my mouth with my hand at the part where he had rubbed her foot with his thumb, and for a moment I thought the next page would say she was dreaming. Considering that this is very unlikely of Miles, to all of a sudden show affection towards Tate. I was even surprised when smiled back at her.

Miles lies to his dad and says that he's going out with his friend, but in reality he goes to Rachael's house. She invites him inside and the two of them stand in the kitchen and talk. He asks if she thinks their parents will get married, and she nods. She also tells him that they will be moving in with him and his dad in a month. This is when they both acknowledge that their relationship will not end well. This does not stop them from kissing again though. They can't help it. Afterwords they agree to stay together for 7 months, because she will leave for college in 7 months.

I was reminded of a movie I watched called "Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between" because the two characters agree to fall in love for the summer and then plan to break up before college. It was an agreement, just like Miles and Rachael.

Miles slices his hand open trying to catch a falling ladder and everyone calls for Tate to help because she is training to be a nurse. While cleaning the wound, she tells Miles it will need stitches. Miles does not like the idea of spending the day in the ER, so he grabs a needle and thread from the first aid kit and tells Tate to use that for now. Tate was hesitant at first but she went through with it after realizing he was serious. While she was threading the wound, she couldn't help but notice how he was touching her knee with his finger. When she finished, he began running his hand up her leg and to her back. This escalated quickly and led to them kissing for quite a while in that bathroom. Afterward, he seemed to regret it, and told Tate to never let him do that ever again. Later that night, Tate finds Miles in the kitchen. They talk for a short while, and then the conversation escalated to more explicit topics. Miles tells Tate he doesn't want love, or a relationship, but he's drawn to her. Tate tells him that she feels the same. The two of them agree to become 'friends with benefits' under two rules. Don't ask about his past, and expect a future.

I was surprised at how quickly the bathroom scene escalated and deescalated. I have a bad feeling about this new friends with benefits situation because those never work out, and it will probably remind Miles of Rachael.

Miles lets his friend Ian on the secret about Rachael, and he allows Ian to help her move in with him. After they finish moving her stuff into her new room, Miles walks into the room with Rachael and the two of them are alone. He pulls her in for a kiss, and moments later, Rachael tells him that they need to set ground rules for their relationship. She tells him they can't make out if their parents aren't home, and no partaking in 'adult-like' activities. Miles isn't very fond of this, but he agrees to follow those rules. For now.

Tate, Corbin and Miles are driving back home, and Tate says she needs to use the restroom. They stop at a gas station, and Tate is relieved. She doesn't actually need to use the restroom, she just wants to get out of the car and get some fresh air. Miles follows her into the gas station, which almost defeats Tate's purpose of getting fresh air out of the car. After she uses the restroom and kills some time, Miles blocks the bathroom exit, and asks her if shes hungry or needs a drink. She says no to both, but then realizes he probably wants to stay there longer, so she tells him she could go for some candy. The two of them stare at the candy for a while, before admitting to each other that they don't actually want candy. When they get back into the car, the three of them converse about how cool it is that Miles and Tate are pilots and get to fly.

Miles asks Tate to come over and help him measure where curtains should go above his window, and then invites her to go shopping for curtains with him. On the way there Tate notices a homeless man, she feels orry fir him, this leads to a future event at the end of the chapter. They get into the shop and Miles decides on a rug and curtains for his apartment. While the lady goes off to get the stuff he bought, he brings Tate behind a decorative peice of furnature and they exchange a few kisses, and Miles tells Tate that he likes kissimg her. Specifically her. Tate feels that he says this with regret.

I felt happy when Miles gave the homeless man a blanket after they left the store. It showed that he has sympathy and cares.
