Tipuānuku - the star that connects all the things that grow in your garden

8. The best place to find matariki in the sky is to find the pot  and look to the left and you will see Te Kokoda and just left of that you will find matariki.

The pot

First find the pot (the bottom three stars of the pot are also called Tautoru, or Orion’s Belt). To find Puanga (Rigel) look above the pot until you see the bright star. To find Matariki, keep going.
To the left of the pot, find the bright orange star, Taumata-kuku (Alderbaran).
Follow an imaginary line from Tautoru (the bottom three stars of the pot), across to Taumata-kuku and keep going until you hit a cluster of stars.
That cluster is Matariki. If you have good eyes you should be able to pick out individual stars. If it looks fuzzy, look just above or just below and the stars will be clearer.

This Term we will be looking deeper into the Māori New Year, Matariki. As Matariki draws nearer to appear in the early morning sky before the sun rises to mark the beginning of the Māori New Year, you will be learning karakia, waiata and a few other things to add to your kete matauranga (knowledge basket) so that you can share with your whanau.

This lesson you will need to learn of by heart to recite the karakia attached, without reading it. The words and an audio clip has been attached below for you to help you learn it. 

Although it would be easy to find a Google Translate of what the karakia means in English, I am not asking for what Google or the internet translates the karakia to, instead you are going to translate the following words that are mentioned in the karakia and come up with your own meaning or/and understanding of what the karakia is implying. Martariki does not mean that much to me as me and my family do not celebrate it, but it is a time to celebrate the Maori new year and see some cool stars that you do not usually see.

Traditionally Matariki was celebrated by gathering with whanau (family) and reflecting on the past. The festival's connection to the stars provided an opportunity for families to remember their whakapapa and those ancestors who had passed away to the heavens.

-Matariki is found low on the horizon in the north east of the sky. Try looking here between 5.30 a.m. and 6.30 a.m.6

Summarise two stories about Matariki 

-Matariki means eyes of God so one story is about how Sky and Earth came together and had a son and that son got really angry so he ripped out his eyes and hurled them toward the heavens thus creating Matariki.

- Once upon a time there were two came together and had children but the children grew restless and were tired of feeling trapped so one night Tane separated his parents and made one earth and the other sky but the other children were sad so it was said that one of the children started to cry and so the tears became stars and created Matariki

Matariki is best viewed from 5:30 to 6:00 in the east during may So you can not see it all year round

For maori matariki can mean celebrating the new year with friends and family and it can also tell the Maori what time it is during the year


There are other countries that celebrate matariki as well. In Greece they call it Pleiades and in Japan they call it Subaru.

In Greece the cluster of stars is referred to as Phidias.

          No Matariki presents its self around May, June, or July

For Maori it is a time to celebrate, cook a hangi, and unite with family.

For other cultures I don’t believe it is celebrated highly.

Matariki and the legend of the 6 sisters. This is the most popular matariki legend.

7. Legends. Matariki literally means the 'eyes of god' Some say that when Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatūānuku, the earth mother were separated, the god of the winds, Tāwhirimātea, got angry and was, tearing out his eyes and hurling them into the heavens.

An old Pacific legend says that  Matariki, the mother surrounded by her six daughters. The children of the earth mother Papatuanuku and sky father, Ranginui, were divided over whether to separate them and bring light and life to the earth.
