4.E.3A. Conceptual Understanding: Astronomy is the study of objects in our solar system and beyond. A solar system includes a sun, (star), and all other objects that orbit that sun. Planets in our night sky change positions and are not always visible from Earth as they orbit our Sun. Stars that are beyond the solar system can be seen in the night sky in patterns called constellations. Constellations can be used for navigation and appear to move together across the sky because of Earth’s rotation.

    Procedures:

    2. Post a visual of the vocabulary terms and the matching picture and read them aloud with students
    3. Do a moon phases demonstration and stop at each phase https://vimeo.com/106444968
    4. Students will have a chance to do their own moon phase demonstration in groups. They will be paired heterogeneously. 
    5. Students will have specific roles. There will be an “Earth” and a person to identify each stage. They will hold up a sign when the moon reached their phase.
    6. Teacher will read the book “When you See the Moon”  
    7. Students will do an exit slip and match the moon phase to the picture
    8. Teacher will play video while students are completing their worksheet. 

    9. For homework, students will be required to observe the moon, draw a picture, and report the name of the  phase the next day
