Energy is what powers the world and is the ability to do things. There are two main types of energy: potential and kinetic. Potential energy is energy that is stored for later use and will later turn into kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is energy in motion. It allows the world to do things that require movement. Another common energy is thermal energy, which is a form of kinetic energy. It is more intense because the molecules are moving faster. A form of potential energy is gravitational potential energy which is the energy that determines how much energy an object will have when it moves downwards. When an object has potential energy and then starts to move, the energy converts into kinetic energy. The law of conservation of energy is that energy cannot be created or destroyed. This means that the amount there is now will never change and that is because energy changes into another type.

The faster an object moves, the more kinetic energy it has and the less potential energy it has. When the carts move downwards, the roller coaster goes faster because the gravitational potential energy is stronger. The potential energy there is from the carts in place doesn’t disappear, but instead in converted into kinetic energy when the coaster starts moving. By the end of the ride, the friction between the roller coaster and the tracks have created thermal energy. The movement of the roller coaster and the way energy converts happens throughout the ride.

I made the design choice of a high drop because I knew that would create a lot of speed which would allow me to experiment with how many hills or loops I would need. It would also help myself add more things that can help it slow down. I chose to have two cars because I thought that it wouldn’t be too much weight and it wouldn’t be too little. I added two loops because it made it easier to slow down and I added a hill at the end because the carts having to go up the hill took a lot of kinetic energy away. This helped it not crash. My track allowed experimental design because the first drop was very high which allowed me to experiment with what I wanted to.

The maximum amount of potential energy it had was 109.8 Joules. The maximum amount of kinetic energy was 60.6 Joules. This shows that the decline of the coaster was smaller than the potential it had. I had to redesign my roller coaster multiple times in order to slow it down at the end. It crashed because the loops created too much energy which made it go faster than intended. In order to fix this, I made the hill at the end, higher so that the kinetic energy would decrease as it went up. The maximum speed it went to was 25m/s at the place where the kinetic energy was the greatest too. This means that the speed is greatest when the kinetic energy is.

The secret behind making a successful roller coaster is to make the maximum kinetic energy less than the maximum potential energy. This allows the kinetic energy to decrease and increase friction which will make roller coaster slow down enough not to crash. The height should make enough potential energy to make it easy to add loops and hills. The thermal energy should increase drastically by the end. The speed should be less in the beginning and decrease to a stop at the end.
