The fact it took the internet only four years to become a widespread communication system in comparison it to television, which took fourteen years, or radio, which took thirty-eight years is shocking. It makes me curious what the next big communication advancement will look like. - Micayla

The idea of the internet being "asynchronous" is interesting. Having the ability to go to the communication whenever you're able and ready makes it much more dynamic. I think this is the reason that the internet took off and has stayed one of the top ways to communicate. -Micayla

The book posits that once it became domesticated, the internet made it easier for people to see that they themselves personally functioned in networks. Do you believe that this it true?- Imari

I'm guessing they said this because of how slow the computer functioned at this time. It also wasn't fully domesticated yet. With so few using it and how slowly it moved, they probably thought it wouldn't be much different than communicating through regular mail.

I think the idea of "technological determinism" comes into play with the internet at the forefront. The internet now a days is so diverse, and I believe if it's creators had wanted to limit it to only certain uses, it would be nowhere near what it is today. -Micayla

The book describes hackers as people who believe that the convergence between humans and machines is a good thing that is fostered by unfettered interaction. By this definition, do you identify as someone who follows a hacker's philosophy? Or better, would you define yourself as a hacker based on this? - Imari

It's weird to think that we used to not even have our own personal phones. The fact our parents could be on the other line listening to our conversations where as now we can talk to anyone in the world privately is quite the feat. -Micayla

I agree, it is interesting to think of how quickly the internet took off. When I hear of new technologies like Google glasses or 3D printers, it seems they are taking a lot longer to catch on and it's almost implausible to think they'll reach the heights the internet has. - I.C.

I agree. It's fascinating to think of what our society would have evolved into had the internet not evolved along with it.

I agree. And to think, we are all participators to an extent. We are participators right now! Every time we share an article on Facebook, we are participating in this sharing of knowledge. Many people would say that it's narcissism that has us sharing articles with which we agree. But through this lense, it's easy to see that there's a bigger picture behind it.

I agree, it's interesting to think that as a younger generation we are more inclined to understand technology. I think it gives us an edge when applying for jobs. Even when we created this padlet, it didn't take us very long to figure out. Where as if it were an adult who didn't grow up immersed in technology, I can presume it would've been much harder for them to figure out. -Micayla
