Alice vs. Caroline

Alice and Coraline are both very popular characters in children's literature. While they share some similarities, they also have several differences. Both Alice and Coraline are young girls who were bored, which led them to go to different worlds that are not their own. From there they faced many challenges along their way back. On the journey, they encountered strange characters and situations, but despite facing unfamiliar and sometimes scary situations they both displayed courage and resourcefulness in overcoming their obstacles. For the differences, we can find them in their personalities and character traits. Coraline is more skeptical while Alice is more curious. We can see this difference when they first entered the new world. Coraline was a lot more careful with the things she was doing, while Alice tried everything even eating something that simply said "EAT ME" even though she didn't know what it might do, she still did it. Overall, while Coraline and Alice share some similarities, they have different personalities and journeys that set them apart.

Alice's Tunnel vs. Coraline's Tunnel

In both of their stories, we can see them going through a tunnel to reach the other world, and from it, we can see some similarities as well as differences. A similarity is that both of the tunnels take the girls into a different world from their own. Coraline's tunnel takes her into the Otherworld while Alice's tunnel takes to her to Wonderland. Both of the tunnels were dark and mysterious but through them, they were able to meet new creatures and characters that either helped or challenged them. A difference is that Alice's tunnel was a rabbit hole that led her to a door, while Coraline's was a door found in her very own house walls. Another thing that was different was how they entered it. Coraline is able to just crawl through the tunnel to get to the Otherworld, but with Alice it was different. Alice had to go through the process of eating strange foods to get small and from there she was then able to enter Wonderland. Overall there we can find some similarities and differences between the two entries into the different worlds.

Theme and Messages

As watching the movie Coraline, I identified the message that things that we have to discover new things to learn ourselves a lesson. If Caroline wasn't curious about the door and didn't try to open it, she wouldn't find herself to a different world and later won't ended up saving the 3 children. A message that I found through Alice In Wonderland is it is okay to be curious. In the movie, Alice can totally ignore the white rabbit and not following it, because if she does so her mom will get mad, but she ended up following it to the wonderland which eventually changed her life. Both of the messages I found in these 2 movies are connected since they tell us to step out of our comfort zone and explore the new world.

beginnings vs endings of each story

The beginning: In Alice in wonderland, Alice was sitting by the riverbank, she was having a boring day until she found a rabbit and followed it into the rabbit hole, which led her to the Wonderland. The same thing happened in Coraline, she was bored going around her family's new apartment until she found a locked tiny door which opens to nothing. But at night, she followed the mice and entered the other world through that old small door.

The end: Coraline was suffered and tried to fight her fake mother in order to rescue the children and her real parents. Coraline had to flee and escaped the fake world through the tunnel in a rush because the monster was chasing behind her. Coraline then had to find a way to hide the key so no one can ever open the door again. On the other hand, Alice's adventure ended more gentle when she just wakes up from the dream and eventually be back to her real world. The two characters both ended up going back to their original worlds and have happy endings.

I have a connection to Coraline's adventure since it reminds me of my old days. As a kid, my parents were also very busy with their jobs and I had to spend my days alone or either with my grandma or my sister. My life was boring and I always asked my parents to take me out, like what Coraline did, but the answer was no because they were too busy. I behaved the same way as Coraline did to her parents by acting like a grumpy kid. Growing up, I realized that I need to have my own world which I have to step out of my comfort zone and explore it myself. I noticed that my parents did try to spend time with me but my need as a kid was a lot. Maturing is knowing how to reduce my childish thoughts and put myself in my parents' position and try to appreciate the time that I have with my family.

I can connect to Caroline since in her story she is growing to be more and more independent. Throughout my life, I have been very dependent on the people around me to make decisions for me but recently this is starting to change. All the things that are happening right now in my life, require me to make decisions for myself. For example, what college I want to go to, and what I want to do after high school. These are types of decisions that I have to make on my own. Like how Coraline has other people help her, I also have people helping me with my decisions, but overall what decisions I make is all up to me and not others. Talking about other people I learned to appreciate my family and friends more and more as I grow up, just like how Coraline learned to appreciate the people in her life at the end of her story. For my picture, I put a picture and my friends since they helped me a lot throughout my adventure in life.
