2D animation is the process of creating an illusion of movement by creating a set of drawings one after the other. 2D animations are traditionally hand drawn.

Some references to 2D animation are Wolfwalkers.

An example for 2D animation: The Wolfwalkers animation was primarily drawn by hand using digital brushes to give the feel of traditional pencil lines.

2D animation software:

Adobe Fresco is a free software with a premium upgrade.

Adobe Fresco allows you create drawings with a variety of brush sets that mimic tradition tools as well as unique brushes. Adobe Fresco has many other features but in particular the app has a simple animation tool by using multiple frames within one layer.

As, if you want to move an object slowly you would move them close together where as, if you want to make the movement faster the spacings would be further apart to increase the speed of the motion to a higher level we can smear the object acting on the motions to increase and create a motion blur effect.

Easing: allows the animation to flow throughout the frames, it is the method of adding small unnoticeable movement through each frame to prevent any jarring shifts within the movement.

Depending whether your relaxed or intense within the emotion, you drawing should act more relaxed or more scrunched up.

Sad: within a sad our forehead muscles pull our eyebrows together and our can be set in a triangular shape closer to the nose and the mouth more further away from the eyes compared to the happy expression.

Angry: The features are closer together, because your muscles are very tense. The eyebrows are inverted.

Fear: the eyes are enlarged and your pupils shrink. The eyebrows are scrunch together and the mouth is further away from the eyes in a thinner line.

Surprised: The features within this expression dilate and you eyebrows shot upwards. Whereas your mouth moves downwards with your eyes being wider.

First I needed to create a character sketch in which I will animate and plan out the motion to capture in my artwork.

CHARACTER SKETCH AND BACKSTORY:

A portrait of a young boy from the past with a brilliant smile with soft wavy hair staring in front of the frame with a blissful expression(positive) and bit of annoyance, the scene capture his innocence and joy of a forgotten memory smiling for what seems to be a camera, his eyes gleaming in curiosity and inpatient's as he is distracted by his surrounds, coloured light showering above him.

IDEA AND AFFECT FOR THE SCENE:

I am planning on creating a small portrait scene of boy trying to smile at camera(the viewer) while being impatient as his eyes caught something more interesting in mind.

So, I can say I know how to use the software and basic (very basic) methods of motion. However, a perfect clean animation yet alone with colour is something I want to start developing my skills in and create a lively look within my artworks.

I wasn't happy with the art style and colour scheme at play and the colour of the background shifting started to look to murky and muddy and whole sketch work seems to drown in it, giving the scene a darker and negative feel, removing the positive theme of the moment .

I decided to shift my scene into something more brighter and more of a summer theme faded in nice gold orange glow to exaggerate a warmer more innocence of the scene.

As a student interested at art, Nab will guide me through negative and positive feedback to improve my art and analyse and observe the movement of my work to improve the natural feel of the animation.

Sketch mistake in the last frame as the hair move along with the eyes.

Video quality and lack of equipment:

As said in the beginning Adobe Fresco is mainly used for sketching which create a small issue in video quality. Which made me decide to move towards Procreate Dreams.

Procreate Dreams is an animation app packed with powerful tools that anyone can use. Allowing the user to create rich 2D animations. Procreate solely focuses on Animation create more variety of tools and potential. Therefore I will start my animation processes in Procreate Dreams and finish the final sketch to animate on Adobe Fresco.

I have clean up the sketch and added a bit more lighting.

What is a Story board?

A story board is a panel or series of panels on which a set of sketches is arranged depicting consecutively the important changes of scene and action in a series of shots.

maybe change the seconds as I'm not sure if its the best measurement here, since I would think that frames would be more appropriate.

Be more detailed about the framing.

Correction:

The animation uses 12 frames per second, the whole animation lasts for 5seconds, the story board showcases my planning processes. the numbering of each frame captures the key movement within the 0.6 seconds to give me the idea of what I'm trying to capture. There are 6 fames within the 0.5seconds.

Overall I have gained a strong influence in critical thinking throughout the process as I develop my skills in observation and analysis of movement and flow of animations, going through precision and overall enjoy the workflow. Animation expanded my creativity through opening up new skills and being more open to new techniques like exploring more colours and discovering new facial expressions, and having fun.
