         <title>Language Portraits</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I was reading a research by Brigitta Busch this week. It was a study on language and identity. The study consists of asking young and adult learners to locate the languages they know in different parts of their bodies. I found the idea quite interesting, so I decided to do a similar activity with my 10-year-old group. To my surprise, all students seemed open to the idea! They really engaged in drawing their portraits and their explanations were amazing! Giovana, for example, told me she drew her body and placed English in her brain because she was thinking in English during the class. Portuguese is in her heart because she loves Portuguese. She said she 'feels in Portuguese'. Italian is in her hand because she gave up (abriu mão) of speaking Italian. Portuguese is also in her feet because she lives in a Portuguese-speaking country (in her words: 'Ms., it's in my feet because eu estou pisando em terra brasileira!). It was a magic moment because I was able to learn more about my students and how they relate to the languages they have contact with. I also made my own portrait so I could share it with them during the show-and-tell.&nbsp;<br><br>Roberta</div>]]></description>
