Although Britain won the war, George III increased taxes on commodities such as tea, sugar and lead to pay its war debts.
The colonies refused to pay these taxes. There were quite a few protests, such as the Boston Tea Party of 1773, in which a group of colonists threw a cargo of tea into the sea at Boston. And as a result, the 2 sides were more closely matched in military terms.
