What is our Big Idea?

For our project, we will focus on biodiversity - the loss of it, and the invading species in ecosystems -, particularly in the municipality of Ílhavo. This is directly tied to the SDGs number 14 and 15. We hope to be able to provide a good answer to the question "How could tourism help preserve biodiversity?"

We will use two methods to answer our guiding questions:

1 - Desktop research, in the websites attached on the powerpoint

2 - An interview to CESAM and APARA regarding the peculiarities of Ílhavo specifically regarding this topic

What is our Solution proposition?

In this presentation, we show the solution we came up with after a small benchmarking analysis and brainstorming.

We decided it would be a good idea to create a Tour Guide company where visitors can learn about the invasive species in Ílhavo and all the problems agregated to them. Besides this, at the end of the tours there are practical workshops of removal of the clams and other species from the invaded waters in Ílhavo.

How could tourism help preserve biodiversity?

1) As a way to raise awareness among the local population and the visitors who may not know about the issue to begin with or might not even have any idea how they are negatively contributing to it. As we saw, tour guides and initiatives like the ones mentioned in the benchmarking analysis are a very common way to raise awareness.

2) Tourism is something that motivates people to take action and be physically involved in activities that will provide them unique travelling experiences. This is something that, like the derbies in the Caribbean or the workshops from our own project, can be fun for the visitors while also being beneficial for the ecosystems they are implemented in.

Final Report

In our final report we present a written description of the overall process of developing a solution prototype for our big idea.
