In this age of hyper connectivity, there is an increasing need for cyber wellness to be taught in classrooms to educate and protect our students as they become more exposed to many technological tools. I found the videos and articles to be very helpful in terms of identifying specific issues students face, how we as teachers can step in to intervene and the use of real-life case studies to illustrate the risks of harmful online behaviours.

The videos highlighted 5 main issues that students may face in the cyber world domain. The 2 issues that stood out for me were the balanced use of ICT and cyber-bullying which primary school students would be more prone too. A balanced use of ICT means to get the most out of the benefits of the internet and managing the risks. This stems from the ability to self-regulate how much one spends on the internet, while not compromising interactions in real life. There is a time and place for online and offline activities but primary school students may lack the maturity and discipline to manage an appropriate balance. Moreover, they may be less able to discern what is healthy and undesirable, thus the need for a parental figure to intervene and educate them on the risks out there. Cyber-bullying is also a prevalent issue that our students face. One in five primary school children have reported being "cyber bullied and I believe that numbers are even higher but they tend to go unreported for fear of being identified. To some extent, the emotional trauma suffered may be more damaging than physical ones as negative comments on social media have the power to reinforce whatever negative thoughts a person might have, which makes it more difficult to cope. Primary school students may not be able to deal with the situation in a positive manner and hence may respond to distress by self-harming or develop other mental issues that go unnoticed.

As teachers, we are called to stay ahead of technological trends to anticipate these issues that our students may face. I feel that this is crucial to help us to empathize to our students needs and behaviours through our conversations with them. We should also be well-informed with the various help hotlines to refer our students to and advise them sufficiently to seek professional help. The use of case of case studies and scenarios would be a good classroom activity to do to relate real life threats to our students and realize the risks involved. This is also a good avenue to impart practical skills to help them safeguard themselves, teach values such as respect and responsibility and to infuse critical thinking skills whenever they engage with the internet. I found the advice to understand our students’ intrinsic motivations to be very insightful. The importance of a teacher’s role to listen, empathize and understand our students’ motivations – need for achievement, recognition, love and acceptance, can be diverted to healthier and more productive activities which the teacher can plan and tailor to in and outside the classroom. It was also a good reminder for me that teachers have to work alongside the community (eg. parents, peers, schools) to create a strong and holistic social system to educate our students. This ensures that what is being taught in the classroom is also supported and reinforced back at home, which creates better accountability and supervision of our students’ online behaviours.

The internet is a way of life for students in today's time. Children are coming into contact with the online community at an increasingly young age. Thus, cyber wellness is a major concern in the Singapore classroom. Cyber Wellness refers to the positive well-being of Internet users, involving an understanding of online behaviour and awareness.

The videos and articles provided gave me insights on the various issues faced by students, and how we can help our students as teachers. Five common issues were brought up through the video. The 2 issues that connected with me were netiquette and cyber-bullying. Anonymity online provides an outlet for students to express themselves. However, some students took to treat the internet as an "anything-goes no-man's land". They forget that people across their computer screen can cause hurt to others. Values of integrity, respect and responsibility are also applicable in the online community. If this issue is not made aware in time, it might spin off into more serious issues such as cyber bullying. Cyber-bullying has serious impact on a child as it can happen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and reach him even when he is alone. Cyber-bullying messages and images can be posted anonymously and distributed quickly to a very wide audience. It is often difficult to trace the source.

"Prevention is better than cure." The video shared great preventive measures for teachers to take note of. We must stay relevant in today's fast paced society and be aware of the current issues. Students must be educated to increase their awareness. Teachers can build upon the original values and bring it into the online community. To do this, we need to build good rapport with our students. It gives us a common ground for interaction and communication. However, in the event such cases happens in our classroom, corrective measures must be implemented immediate to prevent further errors.

However, teachers do not need to do it alone. I believe that parental support is also crucial as students typically spend their screen time at home. Teachers need to work with parents to monitor their child's behaviour. Communication is key, with both parents and your students. Be sensitive and aware of students behaviour.

Cyber wellness is a major concern in today's hyperconnected society. Undeniably, internet has created exciting possibilities for teaching and learning. However, at the same time, social issues such as cyber bullying have surfaced over the past few decades.

The videos highlighted 5 common cyber wellness issues faced by students. It is shocking that the issue about online identity and expression can begin as young as when children are in preschool, at the moment when they start watching YouTube videos. As they advance into their teens and venture into social networking sites, they would set up their own account, also known as their online identity. Through this platform, they might ignorantly disclose personal information that puts them in a very risky and compromising position, which may lead to scams and online proposition. Hence, as much as teenagers want to be genuine in the cyberspace, they ought to understand the potential risks and learn how to protect oneself. In addition, there are times when they may publish feelings and thoughts that may be offensive or insensitive towards certain group of people if unmoderated. (Does freedom of speech exist on the internet?) Cyber-bullying has become an unfortunate consequence of increased digital age among adolescent. It can have more devastating and longer-lasting emotional and psychological effects than physical bullying, as these aggressive acts can occur anytime and anywhere.

Preventive measures are also mentioned in the video. Firstly, we need to stay abreast of the latest youth trends so that we are able to empathise and understand whatever situations students are in. As teachers, it is important that we equip students with social-emotional competences and sound values, as well as develop them into discerning and responsible ICT users. Learning experiences, such as role plays and discussions from authentic case studies and scenarios, provide ample opportunities for the learning and application of good values, skills and attitudes. It supports the transfer of learning onto the authentic cyberspace contexts and most importantly, allows students to understand the destructiveness of bullying and teaches empathy through perspective-taking. Parents play a key in their children's growth. Students benefit most when the home and school environments are attuned to each other. Hence, teachers need to foster positive relationship with parents - to support them in understanding cyber-wellness issues and risks, as well as involve them in reinforcing cyber-wellness principles at home.

Internet is a double-edged sword. When handled properly, it can be an effective tool to increase student engagement and also as a means for students to carry out self-directed learning. When mishandled, it can lead to issues such as cyber bullying, internet addiction and compromising disclosure of personal information online.

I appreciate how the videos highlighted symptoms such as playing truancy, a drop in school grades and increased aggressiveness as consequences of poor cyber wellness. If not for this video, I would not have assumed those behaviours were a result of other issues such as family background.

In addition, the videos covered preventive measures which I find useful and meaningful. It influenced how I perceived the use of ICT tools. I used to perceive ICT tools as merely a means of getting students interested in the topic that I am teaching. Now, I see it as an opportunity for me to inculcate students good values, such as practicing netiquette. Other preventive measures covered by the videos are: using case studies and scenarios (in fact these can take the form of a reading text in English lessons) to show the influence Internet can have on us, teachers to stay abreast of the latest youth trends (and if possible, engage in those technology so as to understand students' psyche and motivation behind those applications) and also, to offer students viable options to replace online activity time (this measure makes students aware of the vast number of choices they can do besides online activities).

The use of ICT brings about benefits and opportunities. But there are risks that come with it. The five main issues mentioned are: 1. Balanced use of ICT, 2. Online Identity and Expression, 3. Netiquette, 4. Cyber bullying, 5. Online relationships.

Children these days are very tech savvy and they use a lot of technology in their everyday life. Hence it is crucial for us to ensure our students learn to have a balanced use of ICT. They should monitor the time spent in the digital online world vs the real- world. Examples of red flag indications are: having too much interactions in the online world through video games and online platforms, as compared to real life, addiction to video games, restlessness/ aggressive/hostile/ irritable behavior when not using ICT, doing extreme things just to use ICT (ie playing truancy, telling lies about their online usage). These are important signs of the overuse of ICT which teachers should know.

Online identity and expression is also another problem that I see amongst primary school children. Given their age and maturity level, they may not know the consequences of revealing personal information (like phone numbers, home address) on such a public platform. This will pose danger to the safety of our students.

As educators, we need to teach our students skills to navigate in both the online world and real world so that they can learn to self-regulate their use of ICT without being too drawn into it. Critical thinking skills should also be imparted to students, so that they will use their discretion to stay safe while using ICT. Teachers will also need to work closely with parents to help monitor student’s behavior and habits which might be a sign of overusing technology or even problems like cyber-bullying. As teachers, we should be a good role model and preach good values and attitudes towards the use of technology. Staying abreast of the latest youth trends will also allow us to stay on top of the new risks that our students are facing with technology.
