Traditional dress is a definition of ensemble garments and accessories that are rooted in the past and were worn by an identifiable group of people. The assemblage seems to be handed down constant despite the slight changes in colour, form, and material that are acknowledged overtime. Traditional clothing or costumes is a phrase that is used widely by both the general public and writers on dress. It evokes images of rural people that are dressed in colourful exotic clothing from a faraway past and place. Traditional clothing continues to be uncritically used into the twenty-first century despite the inadequate founding by researches and scholars.

The ankle-length tube skirt is the most commercial style among the Malaysian Siamese women meanwhile the older generations of women wear the tradional ‘Jong Krabane’ which is a type of skirt made of hand-woven cotton gathered, rolled, and threaded between the legs. One of cultural expression that is presented in the Klong Yao performance is the traditional costumes. The central Thai culture is where the dressing styles are adopted from.

The Northern Thailand fashion in the other hand, continues to be influenced by the tribal groups Thai-Lue, Thai Kern and Thai Yai. One of the styles that they use is indigo coloured blouses that are fastened on one side, and an ankle-length tube skirt. The tube-skirts that are colourful weaving down the middle and decorated hems are designed more gracefully and elegantly for formal occasions.

Kadazandusun is the largest indigenous group of Sabah, and Kadazan Penampang is the biggest sub-ethnic. Sabahans have iconic costumes that they wear to represent themselves which is very unique. Penampang costume may have basic trimmings and embroidery that looks a little plain compared to the other. However, like the Vietnamese Ao Dai and Chinese Cheongsam, simple things are neat and beautiful in its own way. This piece of clothing is inspired by the Sarong Kebaya. The costume consists of a long cylindrical wrap skirt and sleeveless blouse called ‘Sinuangga’ that is designed with gold trimmings running along the neckline collar, sleeves, and along the seams on the edges and along the middle on the back. There are also 20 or so gold plates that are called ‘Betawi’ buttons around the trimming on the neck area. Two to three sets of silver-dollar chains that are also known as ‘Himpogot’ and brass ring belts which is ‘Tangkong’ are worn around the waist and hip to emphasize the curves. Some Himpogot and Tongkang accessories are antiques that are passed down to the women in the bloodline as heirloom or wedding dowry, and they can even cost thousands of ringgits.

Tengkuluk Tanduak or Tikuluak Tanduak is a headdress that symbolises the Minangkabau culture in Negeri Sembilan. The headdress is shaped like a double-pointed horn, decorated with either gold ornaments or gilt brass. The full headdress of the Minangkabau women is usually worn in Adat Pepatih ceremonies, and it tells a fair amount of the person’s background and social status. The embroidered hat made by Balapak material cloth will reveal whether or not the womanis a Bundo Kanduang also known as Ibu Soko, as well as which clan and region she is from. According to Adat Pepatih traditions, Ibu Soko are highly respected female senior leaders of a clan. In addition, Negeri Sembilan is the only state in Malaysia that still practises the Adat Pepatih, which is a combination of practices and rules that govern various areas of social life that originated from the Minangkabau Highlands in Sumatra, Indonesia. Matrilineal customs are observed and women are held highly regarded. One of the most unique and visible aspects of the Negeri Sembilan Minangkabau culture is the colourful garments.
