South Carolina seceded because of several reasons. One of the first things that sparked the idea of secession was the nullification crisis. South Carolina made a majority of its profit from cotton exports and tariffs created during the nullification crisis endangered South Carolina's economy. The state wanted the right to nullify the tariffs and the question of state rights arose in America. South Carolina used slaves to farm cotton so the abolitionist movement was also a main cause of secession. The south, more specifically S.C., was sacred of losing their right to own slaves. After Abraham Lincoln was elected, a representative from the Republican party which was anti-slavery, South Carolina was pushed to secede because of its strong relation to slavery, support of the use of slaves, and the fear the newly elected president would abolish slavery.

Taxation and the issue of States' Rights were more minor issues, but still contributed to their list of reasons to seceed. The final straw was when Abraham Lincoln was elected president.
