Develop passion for German. If you want to learn a language, you should have a sincere interest in the people who speak it and in their culture.

2. Set concrete goals. "I want to speak German" - this is a  nice dream, but for the first semester it can be more specific and realistic:

"I want to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type: counting, spelling, exchanging personal information, and ordering and paying for things.

I want to be able to introduce myself and others and ask and answer questions about personal details, such as where I live, my home, people I know and things I have or own.

I want to interact in a simple way with other people."

3. Speak from the beginning on!
The key to any language is speaking. Start speaking a new language right away and don't be afraid of making mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes.
Find a tandem partner - and start talking.

4. Regularity is important
It's best to talk to a language partner every day, even if the conversations are only a few minutes or even seconds long and very easy at first. In general, take every opportunity to use the new language:

5. Listen to music and read along with texts.

6. Choose "German" as the language in your mobile phone setting.

7. Watch series in the new language.
Yes, you may now watch your favorite series without end, without a guilty conscience, as long as you do it in the language you want to learn. You may choose english subtitle. 😊

8. Learn with sticky notes: Translate the names of your items, clothes, belongings into German and write them on a sticky note. 

9. Travel to the country
Of course, a trip or stay abroad in the country whose language you are learning is the culmination of all cramming. You may also pursue the dream to study in Germany - ask me about options!

I've always liked learning new languages. There’s just something in the way that it is spoken that really sparks my curiosity. Although I think it’s one of the most challenging languages to learn, I really look forward to speaking and reading German. :))

Additionally, I have cousins who are half Germans and whose captions on their facebook posts are in German, so I want to be able to understand them next time without clicking the “see translation”.

As someone who likes to eat different kinds of bread, someday I want to visit Germany and experience the bread culture. Learning the basics of the language is my first step toward this goal.

In addition, as a sociology major, I hope I would reach the level of mastery needed to not rely on translations anymore and read the original works of foundational German sociologists someday.

Instead, I try to take it all in lesson by lesson, so that I can remember them better since they are associated with concepts that I learn from the lesson itself. And since a big part of language for me is its phonetics and diction, I write the prounciation of each phrase/word for easier reference when I go back to them.

I try to play short sessions (around 3-5 minutes) every time I take a break. Due to how the app makes learning German feel like a game, I did not experience any burnout using it. I am currently on a 33-day streak and I hope I can keep it longer.

In addition, I have a dedicated notebook for learning German that contains the new words I encounter and how to pronounce them. I also try to incorporate it into sentences as I find it easier to remember this way. As for my main translator, I use Deepl as I find it to be more accurate and easier to work with.
