“Not finding yourself at the age of thirty-four is a disgrace!” (Miller 5)

When Willy says this, it shows how his mindset is definitely closed off and isn’t allowing him to live a happier life. He says how he believes if a person doesn’t find themselves at the age of thirty four it’s a disgrace which I don’t believe to be true. This also impacts his relationship with his son which is an area in his life that should be bringing him happiness but because of his mindset he can’t find happiness through having children.

“When the hell did I lose my temper? I simply asked him if he was making money. Is that criticism?… there’d such an undercurrent in him. He became a moody man. Did he apologize when I left this morning?” (Miller 5)

When Willy says this, I feel like this is something some one would say when they are living an unhappy life and demanding an apology even when he probably doesn’t deserve it.

“Why? You’re making money, aren’t you?” (Miller 12)

Biff clearly has a bad mindset about how success and happiness come through money. When Happy tells him that he isn’t content, Biff questions why because he has money. In Biffs opinion, happiness comes through money and is the only thing that he thinks will fulfill him. Biff is living off of his dads ideas and believes what he has taught.

“Charley you’re the only friend I got, isn’t that a remarkable thing?” (Miller 76)
Willy argues with Charley for a while because he refuses to take his job offer and won’t explain why. Willy is embarrassed of taking a job from Charley because he feels that he is too superior to have a job like that even though he is completely unemployed. This relates to the theme of humility in the Ted talk because Willy needs to humble him self and realize that Charley is trying to help him and by realizing this, it is the only way for him to become happy.

“I always thought that if a man was impressive, and well liked, that nothin—“ (Miller 75).
Willy says that he thinks that a mans worth is basically based off of how well liked a person is and that if they are, nothing else matters. This is a mindset that should definitely be avoided in order to be happy because this leads to false hope and feeling more empty.

“I’m supposed to have lunch tomorrow” (Miller 87). Biff finally caves into the pressure from Happy and lies to Willy about the meeting with Oliver. When he went in to the meeting,Oliver didn’t remember him and it helped Biff realize how he isn’t really a salesman. When he tries to tell Willy the truth he starts having dilutions. It is important to avoid telling yourself false information in order to be happy. This also relates to story telling because Biff tries to tell himself a false story and give himself false hope that he is a salesman and will be fine when in reality he doesn’t have a job and no source of income.

“No that’s not my father” (Miller 91). Happy, Biff and Willy go to dinner to talk about the meeting with Charley and instead of being focused on that, Happy is too focused on trying to use women to find his happiness. During this time in the play, Willy broke down and went to the bathroom and Biff stormed out because he was angry because his dad wasn’t understanding what he was trying to say. When a women asks Happy if Willy is his father, he says that it isn’t and lies. This behavior of lying and focusing on temporary satisfaction is definitely something that Happy shows that should be avoided to find true happiness.

“You did? The kids like it?” (Miller 93).
Biff confesses to Willy that the reason he flunked math and his teacher doesn’t like him is because he imitated his teacher and was making fun of his lisp. Instead of telling Biff that that was the wrong thing to do, Willys first thing he asks is if the kids thought it was funny. Willy is so focused on other people’s approval that he loses sight of what really matter and ends up not being a good father and pushing Biff to study harder.
