Robert Williams filed a claim against Fredrick Adams, a prison warden, for illegally detaining him and keeping him as a prisoner.

Williams' conviction was set aside because he proved that the information used for his arrest was obtained illegally

Williams was searched by a police officer due to a man at a gas station informing the officer that Williams had a gun in his waistband and was carrying narcotics. The officer then went up to Williams' car and asked him to step out of the car. When Williams rolled down his window, the officer pulled the concealed weapon out of his waistband although the weapon was not in plain sight and the state of Connecticut has a concealed carry law so it was very possible he legally had the gun there. The police then searched the car and found the narcotics but arrested him for possession of a firearm even though that evidence was illegally obtained.

The incident took place in the early morning at a Connecticut gas station.

Legal Significance

This was an illegal case of search and seizure. Therefore after he was convicted of carrying firearm and petitioned for his convictions to be dropped, the district court denied him but the U.S. Court of Appeals ordered that his convictions be set aside. The case did violate Williams fourth amendment rights because he was unlawfully searched because just because someone gave the police officer a tip that he had a handgun does not mean that the officer had the right to forcefully pull the gun from the man's waistband. This is only because of Connecticut's concealed firearm law that allows the fact that Williams could be innocent in that regard. If they would have arrested him on the fact that he had illegal narcotics in his vehicle, because they could have searched his car for those due to the tip very possibly, then his conviction wold very possibly be legal.
