Students might focus on the way in which texts explore the beliefs and values nurtured in particular societies and the ways they shape individuals, communities and educational systems. They might also explore the tensions that arise when there are conflicts of beliefs and values, and ethics.

"The flowers", a short story by Alice Walker explores a young child's loss of innocence. The audience observes Myop lose her innocence in a similar way generations beyond Gen Z have watched social media desensitize young people to topics such as death, sexual acts, and violence. Though Myop was born into the Jim Crow era, being that she lives in a sharecropper house, she still remained naive to the concept of death. Walker, expresses how Myop explores the fields with a light hearted tone, as the flowers come to symbolize her innocence. She is then stopped by a dead, rotting body. Considering how the U.S. is not a communist country, and therefore have very little control of the media that is shared with it's citizens, children are exposed to much more than adults may believe is appropriate. The murder of many people, such as Nipsey Hussle and George Floyd have been recorded and plastered all across social media. For the majority of the youth, these videos weren't disturbing or a big deal, however; a lot of older people weren't comfortable with these videos being on social media at all. To some, social media robs young minds of their innocence and exposes them to content they aren't able to handle, but to others this is the norm.

Alice Walker's short story "The flowers" follows a young girl and her journey to the end of innocence, as viewed in today society innocence is something that needs to be protected. However as demonstrated by the education systems in America, the over protection of innocence can lead to even more damage. Myop, the young girl, discovered a man's dead body and describes some of his features to be "cracked" and "rotten" (Walker). Myop was not prepared to witness death at such a young age, similar to the kids of today's society. The education system often ignores topics such as death, until it's too late. By not preparing young minds to be able to handle a heavy topic such as death, the children of today are left in a constant state of vulnerability. Although we want protect the innocence of the youth, preparing young minds can be better protection than overlooking the issue as a whole. The educators today should prepare the open minds of the young so that they do not reach the end of their innocence and "[lay] down [their] flowers" as well (Walker).

Innocence, the lack of corruption; purity. Everyone in one time in their lives find themselves loosing their innocence's. The cause of someone loosing their innocence is by the experiences that you go through in life. In the short story, "The Flowers," Alice Walker uses flowers as a metaphor for innocence. In today society schools try to keep the youth innocent, hide them from the truths of the world. The school system sugar codes history, they don't inform you about the truths of death, or even how mean and bad the world can actually be. In "The Flower" there is a ten-year old girl playing in the fields having a nice day, when she discovers a dead, lynched body. At the moment all of her innocence is lost. Walker shows the reader how sudden, how brutal loosing your innocence can be. Shows us how an innocent little girl can be a matured women in the matter of seconds.

When discussing the article Flowers Myop is a girl with a giggly positive spirt. This shows when in the first sentence when the author described her as she skipped “lightly leaving her home.” When Myop was taking another adventure on her way through the woods she never would have thought of finding a dead body. In the education systems they don’t want to discuss those hard topics because in their eyes it’s keeping us from having to grow up too fast. This leaves the youth with the mindset of not knowing what to do when real world things happen to us. Possibly finding a dead body in the woods near to your home is not something that teachers teach children in school. Since this is true the experience that Myop has seen will forever change her in different ways to come.
