It officially became the state flower in 1908 after the school children picked it.  Illinois was the first of 4 eastern states to officially adopt the violet as the state flower. There are 8 different species of violets in Illinois, the most common in the dooryard violet.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Illinois Flag</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The flag's design was official on July 16, 1915. The background of the flag is white, on the bottom it says ILLINOIS in blue. The Illinois seal is on it which has an eagle on a rock holding a shield that has 13 stripes and 13 stars, in the eagles mouth there is a banner that says "State Sovereignty- National state" ,the dates 1818 and 1868 are on the rock. In 1969  water ,the rising sun and Illinois were added. The bald eagle represents America and its strength, thirteen stars and stripes represents the original 13 colonies, 1818 represents the statehood of Illinois and 1868 represents the year the current seal was adopted. Lucy Derwent designed the flag.</div>]]></description>
