Madeline gains confidence in her speech when she goes to the library every Saturday to read to Bonnie. Bonnie does not judge her, she only sits and listens to Madeline read. This helps Madeline practice reading out loud.

Madeline begins to accept that reading can be fun and rewarding-- along with herself. Even though she may have trouble reading out loud and not understanding words, Madeline knows that she is doing a good job.

Bonnie (the library dog)

Bonnie lays with Madeline while she reads, putting a paw on her sometimes to comfort her. 
- patient 
Madeline sees that Bonnie is patient with her because she is not there to correct her, only to listen. She also doesn't feel pressured by Bonnie to be or talk in a certain way which allows Madeline to correct herself.
