The mongol empire defended itself using many different ways. They defended themselves both externally and internally. They defended themselves internally by the yassa code, which helped the empire maintain control in the empire using its strict laws, the yam postal system allowed rapid transportation and communication around the empire which allowed them to respond quickly to threats, and they chose skilled people to lead as officers, administrators, and commanders to have a good and strong defence system. They defended themselves externally by using great numbers of enemy captives, they used fire arrows at the enemy behind their shields, and a technique which was depth to avoid costly set-piece battles. The Mongols also formed alliances with other empires, and had standing armies who were always ready and prepared for any attack coming.
